Bletia purpurea is a Mexican orchid. This photo belongs to a collection that I am preparing and I want to share with you. It is a series of around 50 images of orchids in the field or cultivation, of which I share one and (in the coming weeks) I will share here some more. Do you know carnivorous plants? If you do not know them, in the collection that I recently just uploaded to @ClickaSnap (👉 http://bit.ly/2XgHmGo) and @Shutterstock (👉 https://shutr.bz/2U1c74M) you can see some species of Sarracenia, like the one in the photo, Droseras (covered in sticky trichomes) or Dionaea that are known as Venus fly trap. All these plants have the peculiarity that they capture insects to satisfy the mineral requirements (such as nitrogen) that the soil of the places they normally inhabit does not allow them to obtain, that is why they are known as "carnivorous", although perhaps it would be more proper "insectivorous". ¿Conoces las plantas carnívoras? Si no las conoces, en la colección que recientemente acabo de subir a @ClickaSnap (👉 http://bit.ly/2XgHmGo) y a @Shutterstock (👉 https://shutr.bz/2U1c74M) puedes ver algunas especies de Sarracenia, como la de la foto, Droseras (cubiertas de tricomas pegostosos) o Dionaea que son conocidas como las Venus atrapa moscas. Todas estas plantas tienen la peculiaridad de que capturan insectos para satisfacer los requerimientos de minerales (como el nitrógeno) que el suelo de los lugares que habitan normalmente no les permite obtener, por eso se les conoce como "carnívoras", aunque quizás sería más propio "insectívoras". A green heart ... It is the gametophyte of a fern. The gametophyte is the phase of the life cycle in which it reproduces sexually. In my case, the fern spores took around 40 days to germinate and then several weeks passed before reaching the heart shape that you observe. This one is still immature, but do not you think they're precious? Un corazón verde…. es el gametofito de un helecho. El gametofito es la fase del ciclo de vida en la que éste se reproduce sexualmente. En mi caso, las esporas del helecho tardaron alrededor de 40 días en germinar y después pasaron varias semanas antes de llegar a la forma de corazón que observas. Tillandsia abdita (Bromeliaceae) is an epiphyte plant. If you notice, the leaves turn red at the time of flowering and function to attract their pollinators. Plants can also give viruses! Leaf of Euphorbia heterophylla (Euphorbiaceae) infected with some virus, perhaps Euphorbia mosaic virus. It is curious, but in plants, viral diseases can be expressed in different ways, although one of the most common symptoms are mottled, as in this case. A las plantas también les puede dar virosis!! The skin of a bromeliad. The photo corresponds to the epiphytic species Tillandsia balbisiana (an epiphytic plant is one that grows on the trees). The epidermis looks as if it had scales because the trichomes (hairs) that cover it are adapted to help the plant to absorb the humidity; Thus, although it does not rain during a part of the year, the plant does not pass thirst because it can capture the morning dew. In the following pictures you can see how these trichomes look in the microscope and in the last one a photo of the plant. La piel de una bromelia. La foto corresponde a la especie epífita Tillandsia balbisiana (una planta epífita es aquella que crece sobre los árboles). La epidermis parece como si tuviese escamas debido a que los tricomas (pelos) que la recubren están adaptados para ayudar a la planta a absorber la humedad ambiental; así, aunque no llueva durante una parte del año, la planta no pasa sed debido a que puede capturar el rocio de la mañana. En las fotos siguientes podrás ver cómo lucen estos tricomas en el microscpio y en la última una foto de la planta. La muestra revisada corresponde a una que uno de mis estudiantes me trajo hoy para identificar. Do you want 👀 more? Mexico is a megadiverse country and it is estimated that it has nearly 1,300 species of orchids, some of them are typical of seasonally dry forests, such as the one I share in this photo: Barkeria macroshoemakeri. Consider that each of the flowers you see in the photo is about one centimeter in diameter. México es un país megadiverso y se calcula que tiene aproximadamente 1300 especies de orquídeas, algunas de ellas son típicas de los bosques estacionalmente secos, como la que les comparto en esta foto: Barkeria macroshoemakeri. Considere que cada una de las flores que ve en esta foto tiene alrededor de un centímetro de diámetro. This was the last photo of my first digital camera, I took it 10 years ago. It is a close-up of the flowers of Tillandsia loliacea, an epiphytic bromeliad from South America.
