whenever folks talk about harry potter and separating artist from art they always have this indignant 'OH SO IM A BAD FOR BUYING THESE BOOKS?' but thats not the question. the reality is that many will BELIEVE you are bad, and that is VALID. its not your choice what others think of you

'AM I BAD?' is a grand and cosmic question that is well beyond our scope. fine. here on the ground, the DAY TO DAY effects are that your actions contribute to hurt and suffering in small or large ways, and those who hurt and suffer because of you are allowed to not like you because of it. SORRY BUD.

what is alternative? forcing folks to enjoy the art of those who hurt them? THEY DONT LIKE IT. someone saying 'your choices harm me so i dont like your creations and i dont like you' is not offensive, it is the most basic use of human autonomy and it is SO bizarre when folks argue otherwise

if you are a bigot or support bigotry or act in a movie built on the profits of hate, people are allowed to not like you 1. because bigotry is bad and 2. because people generally DONT LIKE THINGS THAT HURT THEM. like this is so obvious. it is not 'canceling' it is an exercise in basic human autonomy

i swear if we had social media in the past people would call the hippie and punk movements 'cancel culture' too. LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE MOBILIZING AGAINST THE THINGS THAT HURT THEM IS NOT NEW. This is so important. AI is ever evolving, especially with trillions being invested into it. There are no more weird fingers at all.

I have run into several videos into my feed thst I wouldn't have been able to tell they were AI if it weren't for the watermark alone. Especially ones posing as police body cam, security cameras and other similar low quality cameras.

It drives me crazy that "LOL steal from the British Museum/The Louvre!" is a meme because like.... you all realize that the stuff in there still deserves protecting, right?

These institutions are MUSEUMS that exist for public education and preservation, not monsters that live off of eating stolen artifacts.

The gems that were stolen were pieces of FRENCH history, made by FRENCH artisans, publicly owned by the FRENCH people and kept in a FRENCH museum.

And now they're being destroyed so some criminals can make a buck off selling the jewels.

I cannot emphasize this enough, THOSE GEMS WERE PUBLICLY OWNED AND ON PUBLIC DISPLAY.

Wherever the jewels came from, they're getting cut into smaller pieces and now NOBODY can go view them and enjoy them and the money being made off of that is going to a handful of criminals not the countries these gems originated from.

Believe it or not, not everything in these museums was stolen from colonized people. Most of the stuff was actually ethically acquired through trade. And most of the stuff in their collections are priceless pieces of BRITISH and FRENCH history that needs to be preserved and protected.

And for real. If you want to see cultural items repatriated to the countries they came from, you'd better put your money where your mouth is and start supporting museums in the global south. For real everyone wants the Benin Bronzes repatriated but can't name a single museum in Nigeria where they can be housed, cared for, and displayed. (it would be the National Museum Lagos or the National Museum Benin City).

Preserving those items and keeping them safely on display is EXPENSIVE and museums in poor countries are often severely under-funded. They need extensively-trained preservation staff, fire-proofing, and regular security.

Crawling out of my hole to remind people that with this current update to Firefox (version 144) they've gone and dumped in their lot with a buncha lil AI tools, namely Perplexity as a new search engine.

So if the sound of that leaves your mouth tasting of tar, here's what you want to do:

In the url bar, type in about:config

It'll give you a big scary warning page that you might poke holes in your browser. Good. You want to do that. Click continue.

One by one, you're going to need to put each of these into the search bar in the page, not up top:

Each of these are gonna have a lil toggle icon on the right hand side that looks like a funky double-ended arrow. Click that and the value next to it should change to false. It all auto saves as you go. Some of these might already be set to false by default and that's peachy.

The next best thing you can do for yourself is to set your default search engine to udm14 or Qwant, but for now, we're just tidying the garden a lil bit.
