no offense but every single character in stranger things is fucking important as fuck

joyce is a single mother working at a grocery store and she’s badass from the beginning. she does her best with her kids and doesn’t let her feelings about their father leaving get in the way. she’s a fighter. she never stopped having faith that will was okay. she also acted as a motherly figure to eleven and didn’t pressure into finding will if it would upset or hurt her

hopper could be written as one of those asshole characters with a shitty redemption arc but he’s not. he’s a father without a child who genuinely just wants to reunite a mother with her son.

mike is so devoted to his friends. he is based in kindness and integrity and is just a force of pure goodness. he doesn’t have to be the bravest or the strongest, he just has to protect the ones he cares about.

eleven was raised in isolation with contact only with machines and people abusing her, and still, she is a beautiful person. she sacrifices herself to save her friends and even when those friends didn’t treat her well, she still fought. she also protects mike at all costs and would never let anyone lay a finger on him.

dustin is such a cupcake!! he loves his friends and he’s the glue that holds everyone together and he’s so smart and he’s just so lovely! he gets bullied for something that he can’t help and yet he is still so sweet and i love him

lucas is incredibly loyal. it’s not that he’s an asshole, he just doesn’t know if eleven is safe. he’s guarded because he’s lost will, one of his best friends, and doesn’t want anyone else getting hurt. but like the good boy he is, he apologizes when he’s wrong and is so brave and fights hard.

will is so fucking strong!! we haven’t seen that much of him but he underwent so much torture in the upside down and abuse at the hands of the monster and he’s still so kind!! he’s kind from the beginning and i love him and i can’t wait to see the awesome hero he becomes!

nancy is so dedicated. she’s a great student, but she doesn’t get the typical rebellion arc. she knows steve’s friends are shitty but she likes him and that’s okay for her!! she calls out people when they’re wrong and she unapologetically loves her little brother and fights until she can’t anymore to save her best friend when no one else cares about her. nancy is more than a love interest!!

jonathan was a mess at first with the whole pictures thing but he is more than that. he is helping his mother raise his brother and doesn’t ask for anything in return. he is still hurt by abandonment from his father, but steps into his place so that will doesn’t have to feel that hurt. him staying with nancy that one night was also v sweet and so many other shows would’ve made it gross

even steve is important. he’s such an asshole at the beginning and says so many shitty things but he genuinely cares about nancy and KNOWS he’s an asshole. he drops his asshole friends and scrubs the slur off the building.

barb deserved better. she was so loyal to nancy and wanted nothing but to protect her.

I get sick of tumblr’s version of self care, which 90% of the time threads into this beautifully: go pet a fuzzy cute animal! pile up your favorite blankets from childhood and watch disney movies! take a nap! play a game from this list of cute soothings games!

More realistically: go take a shower because it’s been three days. Wash the dishes that have been in the sink since last Friday that you can smell as soon as you open your door because rotting food stinks. Pick all your clothes off the floor because that’s where your entire wardrobe is and you’ve already cried today because you tripped over a sweater and realized the cat puked on it. Call someone who can give you enough courage to pay that bill you’ve been ignoring. Put away the crackers because that’s all you’ve eaten for two days straight. Apologize to the friends who are worried sick about you, and if you can’t at least let them know you are ok and need space.

One of the most empowering types of self-care is responsibility, but tumblr just wants to sit in a closet strung with fairy lights and read their favorite fic.

“Cute” self-care for “cute” mental issues. That’s not reality.

July 26th, 2016- Stranger Things (2016), Matt and Ross Duffer

I’m breaking my horror hibernation between Octobers to tell you that the Netflix show Stranger Things has come to save us all.

Its log line is “An ‘80s love letter tribute to John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg films.” And boy is it ever. It gave me the 80′s throwback that I’ve been craving in the form of an artfully referential, original script.

I needed this for a lot of reasons, one of which being that I saw Ghostbusters this week. I wanted to like it. I like Paul Feig. I like pretty much everyone who was in it. And I really like when people stand up to cheetogrub bullies online and do the damn thing despite misogynist backlash. And you know what? I didn’t not like it. But much like the new Robocop, Total Recall, The Thing prequel, Poltergeist (really hated that one), Fright Night, etc., etc. I left the theater asking myself: why? Why do they keep doing this to my faves?

See if you take something beloved and you just copy it if it comes out “less” in any way (which it’s gonna) then congrats you’ve made something pointless and cheap. But if you take something beloved and weave the thematic and visual elements that made it so beloved into something new and clever, than congrats you’ve made something groundbreaking and memorable.

The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers (who I am anxious to see more of and will be reviewing their film Hidden as a part of Horrorween), have mastered the art of alluding to, but not directly referencing, their influences. Kevin Quigley put it well in his rundown of all the Steven King allusions in the show: “You don’t just make pop culture references, you make an amalgam, you recontextualize, you devise your own narrative and only then can you lean on whatever cultural touchstones you need.” These touchstones range from Alien, to The Goonies, to Videodrome and beyond. Pretty much a catalog of my all time favorites. Not to mention that the thing I spend most of my time on (when I’m not watching horror movies), Dungeons and Dragons, plays a huge role in the show. It was like this show was built for me (and every other 80′s horror nerd).

This method of weaving cultural touchstones into something new bleeds throughout every element of the show. From the writing, to the dreamy 80′s synth soundtrack (so familiar to Carpenter’s scores), even down to the casting. I loved seeing Winona Ryder as the outcast mother obsessed with finding a link to her missing son. It was a smart choice as Ryder summons up images of 80′s outcasts (Heather’s, Beetlejuice, etc.) for so many of us.

I could get into the color palette, the dialogue, the crazy amount of talent and chemistry going on with these supremely well-cast child actors, but I want to get to my theories so I can go back and reference this post when I’m watching season 2!

Spoilers Ahead!…

First of all there is Will who is kidnapped into the Upside Down (aka Vale of Shadows, aka some kind of hellish plane/dark mirror) by a monster we learn very little about. The boys call it the demigorgon because Eleven, a tortured telekinetic badass, uses their DnD demigorgon figurine to explain the monster and the Upside Down. Jefferson Grubbs at Bustle has an awesome theory about the significance of the demigorgon in relation to where Will stands at the end of the plot. I’m not sure if it will come to fruition, but even if it doesn’t it is clear that there is some level of deception surrounding Will at the end of the series. Is he infected by the monster, facehugger style? Is he really trapped back in the Upside Down and the Will we see laughing with his friends and hugging his mom is a changeling of sorts? Is he slowly transforming into a monster?

One of the only pieces of seemingly sloppy writing in the show is the way they treated Barb. A lot of people are wondering exactly what happened to her? Why nobody (except Nancy) seemed to care about her disappearance? And why the heck did resourceful, strong-willed Barb die immediately, while tiny child Will survived for what seemed like an impossible about of time? I refuse to believe this is an oversight by the Duffer brothers. I think either:

a. Barb is not dead yet: we see a pretty dead looking Barb in one of Eleven’s bathtime visions and Eleven confirms our fears by saying “Gone” over and over, but there is a worm/slug thing coming out of her mouth identical to the one they pull out of Will when they finally find him and identical to the one he coughs up in the bathroom. Is it possible Barb is being used as an incubator for worm/slugs but somewhere deep inside that horrible image she is alive and season 2 will partly be about her fighting her way back out of the Upside Down?

b. Barb is dead and Barb was treated unfairly throughout the show because we are all Barb (I mean seriously, we like to think we’re a Nancy, but we’re born a Barb, we die a Barb). You relate to Barb because high school was tough, your life now is tough, and if the Upside Down and its denizens were to raid your town you would probably be the girl being eaten by a monster at the bottom of the pool and not the girl getting laid upstairs. Maybe season 2 will explore Barb’s story and the reactions to her death a little more, maybe not because life is not fair and you’re a Barb, I’m a Barb, everyone’s a Barb Barb.

Eleven’s not dead obvi. Re:waffles in the woods. I bet she’s stuck in the Upside Down and we will learn more about the whole worlds overlapping worlds thing and the gates that connect them as she tries to make her way back in season 2. I also am dying to see how her powers progress and if her cooldown times (marked by bloody noses) become less and less as she grows stronger. I also need to know if she can contact aliens with that psychic gift of hers because if so… woah.

Stranger Things gets a 10 outta 10 from me! Any complaints I might have are so insignificant next to how happy this show makes me about the future of original content in TV and movies. I want to know if John Carpenter has seen it and what he thinks, the King has already weighed in.
