Le Chemineau 1905: A-tier

Digging up another oldie today!

There's really not much to say about this one. It's 5 minutes long and it's incomplete; it cuts off right after Jean Valjean gets arrested for stealing the Bishop's silver.

It's not really as "impressive" as some of the other versions on this list from a technical and story telling standpoint, but to be fair it's 121 years old. You can't really judge a film that came out before WW1 by modern standards. I think it's good for what it is and I honestly find the acting and the set design quite charming. but maybe I'm just biased because I like old af media

All in all, it's nothing really too groundbreaking but it's worth to at least check it out.

Les Misérables the Game of the Book Demo: D-tier

I've had this one in the ranking for MONTHS but I forgot to write about it! I'm such an idiot!

Anyways, this game only exists in it's demo stage. The full game can't be found digitally or be purchased physically either, which is genuinely disappointing because the demo isn't great.

There is absolutely nothing to do in this game. You start in the sewers carrying Marius on your back and that's where you'll remain. You can't even exit the sewers. That's basically it. There's nothing more to say.

It's incomplete and borderline unplayable. It's so forgetable I even forgot to post about it.

Oh, to follow up on my previous ask! I also have two children's book adaptations that I'm not sure if you have access to - I don't think I saw them on your list! One is Cozy Classics Les Miserables by Jack and Holman Wang (2016), the other is Bullseye Step Into Classics Les Miserables by Monica Kulling (1995). I would love to scan them and share them with you if you'd like to take a look at them! I personally collect as many book editions as I can, and the children's editions make me so happy haha!

Jean Valjean: C-tier

I'll be honest, this movie was an emotional rollercoaster and it took me a long time to figure out how to rank it. There are things I absolutely adored but others that were completely unforgivable.

Little tangent, it took 135 days post original release for this movie to come out in Austria. I've been waiting for this since November. And this is the first Les Mis movie to come out since the 2012 Tom Hooper movie. 13 years. This is the largest gap between any two LM movie adaptations. The second biggest gap is 7 years. That's insane. As much as I love the 2012 movie, it did irreparable damage. Also, it's called "Les Misérables: The Story of Jean Valjean" in German. It's a small change, but I think they did this because LM is way more recognizable to people here than the name Jean Valjean. I mean, I genuinely doubt that people are going to cinema to watch this if they don't already know LM, no matter what it's called. I feel justified in this assumption because we were 7 people in the theatre.

Ok so, onto the movie.

It's an adaptation of the first few pages of LM, up until Valjean takes Petit-Gevrais's money. And the quality of how it adapts this.... varies.

Ok, good things first. I actually really liked this movie up until around a 3rd into it and considered putting it into S-tier. I love the set and the atmosphere. And the ending was also really good. The acting, costuming and everything was actually fantastic. And this one has Baptistine as a narrator, an unexpected but not unwelcome change. Also we get to see JVJ's sister and her children, we get to see Myriel's backstory, we get a little inside into Baptistine.

But there was stuff I didn't like and, oh boy, was it bad. We got JVJ being physically rough with Magloire, we got JVJ threatening Baptistine by saying "The housemaid is right. You should lock your door tonight.", and, as much as I didn't want to belive it when I first read about it, he pretty much threatens to rape Magloire "I haven't slept with/by a woman in 19 years. Do you really think a flimsy lock can stop me? It's not a question of if he'll come. It's a question of when."

And then there is the violence. Oh, the violence. I'm not really squeemish about violent media, but it just really didn't fit into this movie in this amount. There is a scene where an inmate stabs the prison director to death and then gets the shit beaten out of him by the other guards. There's a scene where JVJ beats a group of guards up (which honestly felt more like watching Witcher 1 or Assassin's Creed 2 gameplay). Also there's a scene of, get this, JEAN VALJEAN MURDERING THE BISHOP. He beats him to death with the candle sticks. Then he stabs Magloire. Then Baptistine. I mean, it turned out to be a dream but HOLY FUCKING SHIT! And the very next scene being Myriel gifting him the candlesticks was just so jarring. It was... wow. Just. Wow.

There's also a scene of a guy spitting his food up back into the bowl (I nearly threw up) and a scene of a guy spitting in JVJ's food. Also a scene where they piss against a wall. These are nitpicks but they really didn't need to do this.

Honestly, I really wanted to love this movie but then they did all this. They wouldn't even really have needed to tone down the violence, just remove the murder scenes and the threats against Baptistine and Magloire. Yeesh.

It had S-tier potential but it sabotaged itself and it genuinely hurts my heart.

Peoples I just pledged 200€ to the Less Miserables Kickstarter. This is the most amount of money I've spent on anything Les Mis related, including my tattoo (aside from the Lyon tickets but our flight was cancelled so we never made it there and it doesn't count.).

There's a lot of stuff included in that pledge so I'm super hyped for when it comes out :D

Less Miserables Demo: C-tier

I was shocked to open my email today and find the announcement that the demo finally came out. Let's unpack.

So, if you know anything about this game, you know it's presented as being to Les Mis what Life of Brian is to the Bible. Basically, it's a parody. It's silly. It's goofy. It's a whole 20 minutes of gameplay.

Basically, Claude van Claude, aka prisoner 80626 goes to prison for 14 years for stealing bread for his daughter and attempting to escape. He gets released on June 5th 1832 and meets and basically buys Clammy from the Madame and her husband with candles he was gifted from a church guy who appeared from behind a gravestone. Him and Clammy ride away on a coach. It's then revealed by Inspector LaBleugh (I think) that Claude got released one day early (!!!!!).

It's really not a lot of content but from what is there, it's easy to assume what the rest of the game will be like. Which is not bad, don't get me wrong, it just is.

I really like the artstyle and the atmosphere in this game. Something about it feels kind of nostalgic and it reminds me a little of Fran Bow. And most of the (like 7 jokes) were pretty funny. Also there's voice acting!

For the negatives, some of the (like 7 jokes) were not that funny. Like the birdshit. Claude van Claude gets shat on by a bird.

There were some technical problems that will probably be patched in the full game. Some voice lines don't play and it can happen that the aforementioned birdshit floats around Claude instead of being on his head.

The C rating doesn't mean it's bad, but given only like 20 minutes of game, it doesn't really feel right to put it any higher.

I'm excited to play (and rank) the full game when it comes out.

Classics Illustrated: Les Misérables: C-tier

I don't know. I really don't know.

It's always the same problem: Why would you adapt a novel the length of Les Mis into a 45 page comic? That's not enough pages!

To be fair, it's not bad. It tells the story. That's about it. It's a summary of the original story for children in comic form. Also we got blonde Fantine and brunette Cosette. We don't get that often.

That was that for the good, now onto the complaning!

I have a big issue with how the clothes are drawn in this. It looks less 1815-1833 France and more "THE BRITISH ARE COMING!". It's a small detail, but it bothers me. It upsets me, even.

This is also one of those adaptations that only have Fantine show up to get fired and to die. I get that they can't put prostitution into a kids comic, but she appeared less than Petit-Gevrais. Come on. Speaking of appearing, it's something neither Éponine nor Gavroche do. I mean, yes, they're there, but they're background characters. Éponine is seen twice, once at the Inn and once as a teenager at the apartment (Azelma doesn't even get that btw). Gavroche is in like one pannel and refered to as "the messanger". Not to speak of les Amis, the Marius hypemen who are there to hype up Marius for being so cool for nearly blowing up the barricade and then die in the background. And of course, as always, adult Cosette gets relegated to The Love Interest(tm) and appears maybe 3 times in total.

There are some weird phrasings and quotes too that are just... eh? When Fantine is arrested, the narrator describes it as "a streetfight", which is technically a term that can be applied to what happened, but it just feels wrong. Also, there's this weird thing where Valjean's like "Nooo I can't be arrested before getting Cosette!" and then Fantine dies and he's like "Ah, she's dead now. Detain me." It's just so dumb. Also also this scene at the barricade: Enjolras (?): Whoever leaves the barricade last gets to blow the spy's brains out! Valjean: But it is I who wants to blow his brains out.

Also for some reason they made young Javert blonde. He looks like He-man.

If you think about it, it's pretty much the same as the classics manga version, but lacks the same distinctive charm that one had. It leaves little to no impression and it's also not really entertaining. It's not bad but I doubt I will read it again.

Also the more I see of these "Literary Classic but comic/manga/etc", the less I think they're made for kids. They seem like they were made for people who are very normal about LM. I genuinely can't picture a kid seeing this comic on a shelf next to literally any other comic and saying "THAT'S the one!".

There are way too many Les Mis adaptations that sexualise the bond between Valjean and Cosette. 🤢

Granted I only know of 4 out of the 80 something screen versions there are, but it's still too many!

Honora: Les Mis for Millennials: F-tier

This is a human rights violation.

If I included every single Les Mis song parody on the internet in my ranking, we'd be here forever, but this one is an exception because it was the closest thing I could find to Les Millénniables, which @piierogis mentioned in their post.

This was made for people who were in their mid to late 20s in 2014 so (I assume) it reflects the humor of that time and age demographic, which is not inherently bad, but it's dated. And therefore kinda cringe, as the kids would say. And I'll admit that I'm not that into comedies or millennial humor, so this does affect the ranking, but I made this account to give my opinion, so...

Basically, it's a parody of On My Own about a girl at a party who's awkwardly On Her Phone (g-get it?) because she doesn't know anyone and they're also all on their phones and she's struggling with life and carrer and isn't that just so funny and quirky and relatable? And in the middle of it it turns into a Rent parody about how much it sucks to be a dude on Tinder.

One thing I did find funny is when the guy she was imagining a life with swipes left on her on tinder in the background. Also they made a reference to Drink With Me.

This was somehow worse than the Animal Farm trailer. The channel is called Funny or Die and I choose the die. (and I think they might have bought their subscribers)

A for effort but no thank you, I prefer hiding out in the bathroom instead of pretending to be on my phone at a party.

Would you happen to know where someone could find the 2000 miniseries with English subs? I remember really enjoying it years ago when there was a version with subs on YouTube, but that one might be long gone now. I know a lot of the non English adaptations may not have subs but I thought there was a chance since 2000 miniseries is a bit more well known.

Sadly I could only find it without subtitles online. Most sites that used to have it are now "DOMAINE FOR SALE" or been taken down due to copyright bs. Sorry.

Cosette short film: C-tier

I'm not really sure what to say. It's an Australian short film starring the girl who played Alice in the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movies. That's about it

Usually I start out with the good and work my way to the bad, but this one doesn't really have either? It's hard to put into words. So basically what happens is:

Cosette and Jim (seriously, JIM?!) are stranded on an island because their motorboat is busted. Jim dies. Cosette makes her way to civilisation and to what looks like a row of vacation homes. She breaks into one, is caught, explains her parents are dead, is given food, the end.

There's this weird thing about this one; it's not really a Les Mis adaptation, but I think it wants you to think it is. I mean, it's called "Cosette", Cosette lives alone with her father, she says her mother was taken from her by "sluts and whores".

Honestly, it could've just been called anything else and it would have been fine, but now it's tied to LM and it's on this list.
