when hotch tells jack to go with “ miss jareau “ after he kills foyet , it isn’t because jack has never met jj. when tf has hotch ever called her miss jareau ? no , this was a sign of hotch attempting to slip back into professional mode as his team and other FBI personnel arrive. he is still the unit chief , and he realizes there is going to be a thorough investigation into these incidents that may cost him his job , the job he sacrificed his wife and jack’s mother to. so he attempts to be professional and calls her “miss jareau” to distance himself from them , from his team. because he knows that if he can distance himself from them , he might just be able to protect them from drowning with him during the subsequent investigation. he’s already decided he’s going to take all the blame , and so as other agents file in , he puts on his best mask and tries to fall in line. HE IS DISASSOCIATING FROM THE EVENT. he is trying to be SSA aaron hotchner , BAU unit chief , rather than aaron hotchner , widower and single father. and it works for a minute. as he hands jack over to jj and doesn’t look morgan or anyone else in the eye , it works. it works it works it works …
and then he sees haley. and he falls apart.
#this whole thing deserves more attention and it will be delivered soon#but that line always just rubbed me the wrong way#because you cant tell me after that many seasons#that jack doesnt know JJ#especially when HALEY LITERALLY CALLS JJ TO GET THROUGH TO HOTCH#like yeah no#but also im just trying to wade into the haley thing#because it is literally the singular most life - altering event for hotch#polarizing in so many ways#integral to his very being#and not just because they were childhood sweethearts or first loves#or even soulmates of some kind#it is because of all the ways hotch knew he would lose her to this job#this was not one of the ways he saw coming#even after them going into witsec#he thought they were safe#as long as he played his role#and he was wrong#he was so terribly wrong
the absolute amount of character development hotch quietly goes through from season 1 to season 12 14 is vast and ridiculously so. you see him go from this hopeful and bright new dad —even straight out of being a lawyer , he’s still shiny and brand new when he joins the BAU— to this rigid and war - torn man. he still knows his job , his limitations , his responsibilities. never once does he let them slip , even when he becomes a single father. but he just … sheds his skins in silence and never lets anyone see how much it affects him after haley dies. because after that , he no longer believes he deserves sympathy. that’s why letting beth go is so simple. he doesn’t hold onto good things anymore. he lets them go the moment he is given the chance , and the only good he allows himself is jack because jack deserves to have the only parent he’s left with whether hotch deserves him or not.

❝ forgive the mess, agent hotchner. someone’s seriously underestimating my ability to read fast and work around the clock. ❞ she’ll take a nap, if she can find her couch again, it’s no big deal. isabelle hasn’t been sleeping properly since college, and she’s doing okay. well, she’s still alive, anyway. okay might be reaching slightly. but that’s why she’s got this job, isn’t it? who needs to be okay when you’re so busy you don’t have time to think about it? ❝ i appreciate you meeting me, actually. i studied your cases when i worked for the DA. ❞ a different life. for both of them, she guesses.
she sighs, now, and fiddles with the cuff of her sleeve. ❝ i have a client who fits a profile, only because the profile was changed retroactively after he was arrested. the commissioner wanted the stats. i have someone who’ll attest to that, but my problem is…the police stopped looking for the killer, and even their initial profile is suspect, now. they don’t care. i do. i…hear profiles and dealing with people who are stonewalling you is kind of your area, these days. ❞
❛ so , what you need is exculpatory evidence. ❜ it’s not uncommon of course. hotch has watched tunnel vision form right before his eyes , has been a victim perpetrator of it himself. it happens far too often for comfort and has become one of the leading problems with both cooperating with local law enforcement and with the criminal justice in general. he would know. he became an attorney the same reason his father did , because they were tired of watching young men who looked like them be railroaded into a lifetime in a cell. now , hotch does all he can to stop it before it gets to a judge.
so how can he say no to her ?
❛ it'll look like a fishing expedition on my part. without an invitation by law enforcement , we can’t work the case as is. we - i and any volunteers i can manage would be working on our own time , and there would be no guarantees. fixation is hard to combat , even with the most compelling evidence. ❜ he looks around , finds himself nostalgic over the mess one’s office can become if one looks away long enough , and he smiles to himself. it’s there and gone from one breath to the next. ❛ do you have the file ? ❜

There’s a small tap of pen against pad - she can remember most things well enough. Her mind is sharp, but she still makes a small note of it. Work experience was one thing, but actually being able to talk to one of the profilers? That had been more than she’d expected. “So ye look into patterns of behaviour to try’n figure out a motive? I’d imagine it’s tryin’ work at times,” she replies with a small hum. Work related chatter seems to be the best thing to approach him with, because it was something in their mutual interests - shadowing him should be fun enough. “I’d like to get into this field mysel’, one day. But I’d imagine ye’d be knackered at the end of the day.”
❛ motive comes upon the culmination of all of our preliminary work. once we see the motive , we can deliver a proper profile , but we break it up into steps , each one being important. ❜ he can teach. he can learn too. he believes that is what’s made him so effective in his position. no matter how many times they had tried to tear him down , it had been futile due to the loyalty and respect he’d EARNED by both teaching AND learning. it’s a skill he hopes to pass on just the same. ❛ victimology is always the first step. the victim of a crime —dead , alive or deceased— is our best insight into the unsub , or unknown subject. ❜ he leans back in his seat , contemplative. ❛ i’ll tell you upfront. this job is deeply rewarding , but it comes at a cost. sacrifices have to be made each and every day. —why ? what would be your reason for wanting to be in the field ? it’s the most crucial question , and you will have to answer it again everyday because the moment you lose sight is the moment you lose yourself. ❜ @onlyliberty
