Five years ago today, the world of football lost a very special goalkeeper. On November 10th 2009, Robert Enke decided to end his life. He stepped on the rails, not too far from his house, and let a train get him.
Robert Enke had been suffering from depression, and in 2003 he had started therapy. Only two days before his suicide, Robert had been part of the match between Hannover 96 (his club) and Hamburger SV, which resulted in a 2:2 draw. In his good-bye note he apologised to his family, friends and the doctors.
This is just another proof that you never ever know what a person is going through. When you look at this picture you would never think “oh, he looks so upset, a guy like that could never be depressed?”. Depression is real and it is an issue that we cannot ignore.
During a press conference Oliver Bierhoff started crying, Robert’s old team (FC Barcelona) held a minute of silence for him, the players of the Ivory Coast wore shirts that had his name, the date of his birth and the date of his death printed on them, an entire stadium said good-bye to him, in presence of his wife, Teresa.
This is a tragedy that can teach us two things:
1. Depression is not a joke. It is real, it makes people feel things that will lead them to suicide. This is serious.
2. Don’t think nobody loves you. Even if you feel alone, or if you feel like nothing in the world is right, there are people who are there for you and who love you for what you do and for who you are. You are not alone!
Please take a moment to remember this man as who he was. He was part of the German NT, he played for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Benfica Lissabon, FC Barcelona and Hannover 96. And he has influenced all those clubs with his skills, and more importantly: with his personality.
