When Veronica had come to the palace, Nadia took the girl under her wing quite quickly. She was so young and so naive, her eyes still full of childlike joy, her face the essence of youth, and while Nadia didn't necessarily want a child of her own, she acted as much of Veronica's mother as she could.
Even if the reason why the girl was to stay wasn't quite pleasant, and even if Veronica felt terribly alone, Nadia was there. Even when Lucio was being the worst, and the poor princess couldn't take it anymore.
The Count was infuriating, and on good days, Veronica ignored the man, who was almost twice her age. He was nothing more than a selfish, egotistical man, who seemed to enjoy to watch her cry. At least, until Nadia told him off for it. He seemed to have no sympathy for Veronica, and so in return, she had none for him.
On most days, the palace was an enchanting place to be. Nadia mentoring her, exploring Vesuvia, and the sights and sounds of the new kingdom made Veronica forget her reason of stay.
Then a letter came, from her dearest papa, about finding suitors, and men much older and much more tired of life were to meet her, and it was so terrible, and Nadia wasn't there, and Veronica felt alone.
When a noble touched her hand, she felt disgusted, yet no one seemed to understand. Even a servant chided her for being rude when she refused to kiss one of the men on the cheek. She couldn't take it, bursting into sobs, and running to Nadia's chambers as fast as her feet could take her ( she had thrown her heels off quite quickly. )
Without so much as a warning, she burst into the room before anyone could stop her, vaguely aware someone was in there with Nadia, but not stopping.
"I'm sorry, Nadia, I am," She hiccuped out, hurriedly wiping tears but they wouldn't stop, no matter how fast she tried, "They were just so horrible!"
And before she could say anything else, the shorter woman has her arms around her, moving them to a cushioned bench. She whispers soft words, running a hand through Veronica's hair ( a miracle it wasn't a tangle, but she hated it braided. )
"It's alright now. They can't bother you here," Nadia reassures, waving a servant who had come to the door away.
Veronica sniffled, as her tears stopped slightly, still sobbing a little. "I can't believe they'd do this to me! I can't believe Papa has practically forgotten me,"
"Don't say that. I am certain he has not forgotten you," Nadia says, voice calm and smooth and caring, ready to hold the girl til the end of the world if that is what it takes.
"But he has!" Veronica cried, interrupted only by her own sobs,"I write, and I write, and I write for months, and the only response I get is one without my name, telling me to hurry up and get married. They just dumped me off here to get rid of me."
Nadia wipes her tears away, lips pursed, though the princess can't see. If she could get her hands on that king...
"That is horrible, darling," Veronica sniffles at her words, "But, I'm here for you. Never forget that,"
Veronica's tears have mostly subsided, and when shifting a little, she sees the person in the room was none other than the count, who was awkwardly trying to leave the room at that point, trying not to disturb them. "I'm so sorry, Count Lucio," She immediately spits out, eyes wide in panic, "I didn't realize -"
But she's interrupted, not in the way she was expecting. "Nonsense. It's quite alright. I'm sure Noddy will take good care of you. I'll send for some tea," With that inexplicable remark, the Count leaves, leaving Veronica more confused than before, but the tea goes come, and Nadia is there for her, letting Veronica sleep in her bed, while she worked on something, sitting beside her, and after it all, she felt much...calmer.
