I just had a thought

If on that episode where the apple siblings go digging for information in their parents, both AJ and BM (or just AJ, i dont fully remember) are SURPRISED that their mom was from a rival family

I mean... considering her mom's name and cutiemark, surely that would have striken some questions among the children, which leads to my theory:

AJ's mom died giving birth to her and thus Applebloom is adopted (probably from someone in the apple family who also died or couldnt take care of her)
