We have not agreed to pay for anything. Returning frozen assets is just giving Iran their own money back after we previously took it from them. And assuming that the “investment fund” that’s being discussed ever materializes at all, its structure as an investment fund means that any money put into it will be returned, likely with small profits (and besides, it will probably be more GCC money than US money). The only effect of this bullshit line of attack on the US-Iran deal is to make peace less likely.

But I need y’all to understand that if someone doesn’t give you their government name in a queer space, it’s not because they’re “mysterious,” and you do not have permission to take it upon yourself to figure out their “real identity” and go digging for them online like a private investigator. when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).

Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.

I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.

Knowing about the monstrosity that is the US Empire allows you to see many kinds of horrors in daily life that can never be overlooked, but one of the most mundane yet weird ones is scrolling through feeds and seeing art of a character in a US-flag themed shirt or bikini or whatever. The reason why gods no longer feel as threatening or powerful, not only in greek myth retellings but in a lot of modern day media, is because people treat them as humans with superpowers rather than gods.

Yeah, they are big, and they can control the weather or whatever. But where's the influence they have on human society? Where's the respect? The reverence? The chapels? The hymns? The rituals?

Authors mostly depict people adoring a god when it's an evil cult and they are about to make a human sacrifice or something like that.

Ancient literature has gods that feel like gods because they were REAL gods to them. They wrote about them with actual fear and reverance to them. And the influence that their gods had on their people seeps in every aspect of their culture.

You don't even have to go that far. Think about catholicism and christianity. Maybe you yourself are not a religious person. Yet, you find yourself saying things like "Oh my god" or "for gods sake" . I would bet that you have heard a christian song at least once in your life. Or that you know a proverb, or at least know what is a proverb.

There's a lack of that in a lot of these new stories. There's no one that actually respects these gods. The gods themselves barely have an effect on the everyday life of people.

They lack that aura, etheral and misterious. They lack what makes a god a god. What good is that they command storms and bend nature to their will, if humans don't even respect them? Adore them? Revere them?

What's the point in always giving the atheist hero the reason?
