The conversation should have ended minutes ago.
You know it. The man across from you knows it too, though he keeps talking—words stretching past their point, attention lingering just a little too long.
"—and I thought perhaps we could continue this somewhere more—"
You hear the interruption. The words are not loud, just enough to be precieved as intended.
You don’t have to turn to know who it is. The man does instead of you too and his expression changes instantly.
"Lord Hokage—I didn’t realize—"
Kakashi stands beside you, book in one hand, posture as relaxed as ever. Like he’s been there the whole time.
There’s the faintest shift in his gaze as it passes over the man.
The corner of his eye creases slightly with a knowing smile, and the man falters upon noticing that.
You don't move. You don't have to anymore.
“We can continue this later,” the man adds quickly. A little shameless. Of course.
But Kakashi doesn’t look at him again. The conversation ends without an other word as the man excuses himself. His steps retreating just a little faster than necessary.
And just like that— you exhale softly, finally turning towards the silver haired ninja.
"Was that really necessary?"
Kakashi tilts his head slightly. A thoughtful humm leaves his lips.
His gaze settles on you, calm and unreadable.
You blink at him then sigh again, though not in in irritation.
"I know you did that on purpose."
A pause follows then his eyes crease faintly with a hint of amusement.
You hold his gaze a second longer—then shake your head, and cannot help but smile at him trying to act like nothing happened. Like it was the most natutal thing to do.
And in away... he might be right...
"You didn’t have to, you know...."
Then you step closer, just enough to close the space between you.
You see it right after, as the words leave your lips—the way he stills for a moment, then his shoulders ease slightly.
It’s subtle. But you know him well enough to notice that your approval of his interruption made his heart ease.
You reach for his hand and take it gently, your fingers slipping into his without hesitation.
For a second—he does nothing. Then his hand curls around yours, steadyily.
The faint crease at the corner of his eyes returns, a little less garded, more warmer this time.
You let out a soft breath - almost a laugh. Then you tilt your head slightly, to study his dark eyes, yours crinkle at the corners with fondness.
This—this quiet way he has of stepping in, of making it known that you are together without ever stating it harshly—is something you’ve come to notice by now. It's unnecesery, really... yef somehow still strangely endearing.
And though it happens rarely, you have to admit—
it’s a little more flattering than it has any right to be.
Author's note: He would absolutely be a little quiet gatekeeper at times. 🤭😌
