the irish farewell
my parents met on saint patrick's day, 46 years ago. toasting his memory over drinks, she asks: "do you ever think about what it would be like if he was still alive?" i was surprised by the question. "no, i try not to. hard to bear the thought. but every day, i wish he was."
“Unconditional positive regard” feels a lot like what I call the “theory of dependable goodness.” I’ve been living for this for a long time, so it’s remarkable to see that’s actually called something.
i have to remind myself that joy and humor and kindness and patience are gifts we give to others. they aren’t always big or bold or flashy, but when consistently given, they are sweeping and substantial.
i hope they make a difference, too.
