I think one explanation for Covenant’s poor reception is that, a lot of people think they want answers when they actually don’t. People are like “Ooh! Mysterious! I wonder what the explanation is! I want answers!”

But they won’t actually be satisfied by any explanation or origin story. It’s like Spock said to Stonn “You may find having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.” 

So if you start to tell people about the origins of the Xenomorph, no matter what explanation you give, for some people, it takes it down off the pedestal of mysterious unobtainable knowledge. 

And, maybe that was the whole point because the whole Prometheus / Covenant story arc is about searching for the origins of man and finding unsatisfactory answers.

I’ll say one thing for the two train wrecks that are Prometheus and Alien Covenant… they did give us the very beautiful and deeply disturbing prototype synthetic, David.

An android so spectacularly hard to please that he eliminated the population of an entire planet simply because they disappointed him. ‘I tell you that it’s sad but true… there’s just no pleasin’ you’ (Boom! Bap! Pow! - No Pleasin’)
