Wolves howl in different dialects according to researchers. They analyzed 2,000 recordings and came up with 21 different howl types based on pitch and fluctuation. Each species of canid whether dog, coyote or wolf has its own favorite calls. Researchers can even identify wolves by their subspecies.
Find out more about how this could help canid conservation efforts and how studying howls might reveal something about our own language.
Learn more about these chatty wolves! -Emily
oh my god roach does erskin have a southern accent in wolf
is bel’s accent midwestern or middle eastern
inquiring minds want to know
oh my god i don’t know what bel’s accent would have started out like! i would expect the middle eastern population to have developed a really interesting dialect since the russian werewolf strain was introduced in the gulf war. and wolves and werewolves are all a lot more mutually intelligible to one another than human verbal languages. but bel’s spent no time at all talking to those werewolfs, he was infected and then shipped right back home, and has probably only ever conversed with erskin, right?
and for erskin’s part, he’s probably got the same southern-bayou-swamp-wolf dialect his maman has, since she’s the matriarch and raised her pups with that (even if a lot of the family has since dispersed into florida), and lord aspera wouldn’t have contributed his own dialect, being turned like bel. plus, england doesn’t have wolves anymore. there’s some in france, which is where a lot of the traveled-to-europe part of erskin’s family goes when they split off from lord aspera’s south england preserve. so erskin’s dialect would trend towards more french-creole than, say, scots-irish-appalachian. but verbally he speaks the same received pronunciation english as his dad, who would have insisted on it back when he had hope that erskin might be his heir in a human way.
the ways werewolves speak must say a lot about their background, since you could cross-index their native wolf dialect with whatever their human language is. if bel ends up looking like a russian nightmare, talking like he’s from the fucking bayou, then turning into a greek-descent midwesterner, though, that’s pretty fucking funny. i feel like a lot of werewolves would conclude ‘either a soldier or a very unfortunate tourist’ from that. erskin would get a headtilt too, since redwolf-born werewolves would be almost entirely southern american, while british-native humans would be turned by continental populations and be almost entirely grey wolves. it’d be like finding an arctic wolf that only spoke korean. you’d be like ‘okay, who got how lost?’.
