Umekichi is actually a modern artist, releasing her first album in 2001. She plays shamisen and sings in a traditional style. While performing solo, she dresses in a traditional style, with white face makeup and a classic hair-do, but also performs with dancers as a part of a group (her solo artist name and group name are the same in English, but are written slightly differently in Japanese, うめ吉 vs. Umekichi).

Her modern approach to both performance and education about classical Japanese music (particularly to foreign audiences) has garnered both praise and criticism. Some believe she is helping to keep old ways alive, while others believe she approaches the style too carelessly.

Personally, though I don’t know if I would call her music an authentic traditional style, I do enjoy listening to it, if not for the fact that it has far better sound quality than most recordings of traditional style music.

Though she is a modern artist, I have chosen to post her here, categorizing her music based on style rather than era.
