Truth be told, he’d been in the castle for nearly two weeks already, always sticking to the shadows and avoiding people at all cost. Was easier to fly under the radar then to draw attention to himself, or so he thought. Now, normally, Maddox was one that rather liked being alone, but in a place this big, a new Country and tons of people that didn’t really know him? He got curious, decided to let himself come out of the shadows ever-so-slightly. Her comment caused him to chuckle lowly, crossing his arms against his chest.”You think if I cleared everything out of here, I could turn it into a boxing ring? Maybe have some other things to train in here too? Not that that’s… illegal, at least it’s not here that I know of.” He retorted, his brow raising slightly as a sigh crept past his lips. “My name isn’t on the room, therefore you’re allowed to be here just as much as I am. Can’t be that selfish considering our circumstances, can I?”
“ not much of a conqueror, then ? ” chiara revokes her former stance, stepping slowly into the room to inspect it from all angles. “ boxing... ” her fingers smooth over a surface, collecting dust that isn’t there. “ i always preferred wrestling. watching, not participating, obviously. ” she presses both palms against the polished wood this time, supporting her weight as she raises both eyebrows in some kind of warning that she has another joke ready, “ it’s more ROMANTIC. with all the hugging and such, yes ? ” the exchange doesn’t feel entirely natural to chiara, though any rarely ever do. she’d come here to avoid the sickness, but the reality that the collection of royals all threatened one another’s well-being all the same had begun to sink in by now. she isn’t ashamed to act as if she’s unbothered by the competition, that her mind is elsewhere, anything to prove she is not a THREAT. “ i think you could do it, definitely. though i’m not sure how much use you would get out of a ring here, honestly. do you think any of these people would be interested in fighting ? combat skills never came up in my education. ”
WHILE SHE HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE process of his originally intended trick, teo couldn’t bring himself to inform her of her wrongdoing. the grin on her face and her happy tone are something he doesn’t want to ruin, and so he quickly shifts his thoughts to rearranging his plans. “ that’s lovely. your people must cherish you very much, ” he tells her, and he means it. he doesn’t know the princess in front of him, but it seems like the title would fit her kind eyes and sweet smile. meanwhile, his fingers deftly find a different card, now fulfilling a new purpose in his trick. he reaches behind her ear, gently brushing a piece of hair while producing the king of hearts from where it was hidden up his sleeve – while to the observer, it appears as if conjured from the air itself. “ to complete the pair, ” he says, bringing the card forward for her to see.
“ of course they did, ” she speaks surely, as if she’d ever had adequate exposure to the public to understand their opinions herself. “ and i cherished them right back, ” the use of past tense is indelicate, but it’s a rare TRUTH she won’t gloss over. she’d left a small country almost in flames, the survivors having lost faith in chiara’s god, and consequently her. there’s a brief proximity that leaves her flushing customarily before she gasps, ELATED at the trick. “ amazing ! ” her hands come together in a quiet but enthusiastic applause, truly believing the other is deserving. “ is this a big thing where you’re from ? i’ve seen some rather good stand-up comedy, but that’s about it for live entertainment. ”
Alexandra’s fingers danced across the keyboard, lighting the room up with soft twinkling music. She had been at this for almost two hours, taking solace in being alone. This, and the little corner she found in the library have been the only two places she goes to since she got here last week. They reminded her of home and were the only things that brought familiarity to her. Being one of the last to arrive, she hadn’t met most of the other royals - not that she was in any rush to meet them. She just prefered to keep to herself unless needed otherwise, and she was quite content to stay here. “Meow.” Alex paused her fingers for a moment to look down at the fluffy white cat at her feet. “I know, Snow. We’ll go back soon, just a little while longer. Promise.” She smiled down. Snow sat up and rubbed her head at her feet in some sort of understanding before wandering off to a corner to occupy herself in the meantime. Alex resumed her previous melody before she heard some shuffling in the corner. “Snow, darling, I said we’ll go soon-” Alex said just as she looked up towards the sound. It hadn’t been Snow.
“ snow... is that your cat ? ” she had caught a glimpse of the animal on her way in, keeping her distance. chiara had been wandering about aimlessly, still waiting on demands that would never come, when the she’d heard the other playing. it was a mix of curiosity, admiration and ENTITLEMENT that led her into the princess’ presence. “ do you always talk to animals as if they are people ? ” the choice some made, to invest so much love and energy into a creature, was one she would never understand. she had wanted horses as a birthday gift once ( or an entire farm ) but was swayed to fund a new church instead. her access to animals was limited to publicized shelter visits and the spoiled lapdogs of her guests, but their lack of intelligence was drilled into her by a cleric in response to small talk offered by an eight year old chiara. “ or is it just that one ? ”
sleek, polished leather shoes tapped along the hallway, they were onyx – like the rest of his clothing. he donned finer quality garments most of the time, a habit he had developed back at home. his parents were very funny, extravagant people. they were always showing off, always flaunting their golden items and old fashioned royal merchandise – yet in such a way that everybody still loved them; didn’t resent their wealth and positions of power. it was something he’d learned to miss after yasir died – the happy aura, the beauty and extravagance of life. the promise of his parents passing shortly after was lingering in his mind, the anxiety of being alone creeping on him and grabbing him by the throat. the gilded age of his existence was over, replaced with sickness and cold. he kept his appearances up because there wasn’t much else to control. for now. he exercised grace with his strides, one hand in the pocket of black slacks, the other choking the neck of an expensive wine bottle. he was planning to open it up in a room, entertain himself with a drunken night. he wasn’t too much in the mood to socialize regardless of being a rather social person before, because he had reservations about becoming close with someone he might have to eventually behead. still, he didn’t want to drink alone. when he hears footsteps approaching from around the corner, he’s prepared to put on a friendly face – though he isn’t going to ask for them to join unless the person inquires about the wine in his grip.
though she had stolen the vase of white freesias to mask the scent of her freshly painted nails as she moved between rooms, chiara couldn’t help but enjoy how the flowers suited the role she was always playing. only now that she’d begun singing to herself did she lose her air of elegance and begin to look like a total OPHELIA. the tune made up a list of highly important tasks she intended on completing tomorrow: she needed her hair blown out, her eyebrows touched up, “ maybe i’ll pick out some new diamonds. ” she had heard the second set of footsteps a few doors back, but assumed it was staff. the musical number came to a sudden end upon realization that the footsteps belonged to someone she could not afford to dismiss. “ oh, hello, ” bowing her head decorously as she considers what to do next. “ i prefer it sparkling, ” she speaks once her eyes catch the wine in his grip, nodding in it’s direction as some form of explanation. “ not that i indulge often, of course, ” LIE. hands tighten around the ornate vase, an attempt to feel more secure in herself, she continues, “ enjoy it. i’m sure it’s well deserved. ”
settled in a chair with a book in her hands, catriona still felt bored. it had settled into her bones, her body restless and on edge. every now and then she would peek up with HOPE that chiara would show up and whisk her away from this state but today obviously wasn’t that day. though, after what felt like HOURS, the brunette’s eyes were finally met someone with someone entering the same room. a malign smirk forms at her lips, eyes narrowing in on the book she was trying to read——this could be a new source of entertainment; well however the person reacted that is. “ it’s quite a shame. ” she says aloud, a small sigh accompanying. “ all of this is certainly going to be a WASTE of everyone’s precious time considering i’ll be the one getting the crown. ”
five steps forward and three back, all in time with a song that was only playing inside chiara’s head, she made her way through empty halls, clearly lacking purpose for the day. she could only have so many baths drawn, so many elaborate meals delivered, so many timid conversations, playing with the uniforms grew old. the next game was to ACCIDENTALLY find the one person she would purposely seek out. half an hour must have passed before long limbs pass over the right threshold and the sight of catriona triggers a loud exhale. “ LIBERATE ME, ” she groans, falling to her knees beside her companion’s chair. her own joke is eclipsed by cat’s statement, chiara simpering in response. “ oh, mhm ! why do they bother ? especially dressed the way they are... ” she’s teasing the entire group, though there’s a select few targets that stand ahead of rest, “ at least this will all make a great story years from now. ”
arachne walked into the main hall of the castle for the first time, taking in the appearances of the other royals she had never had the chance of meeting. her eyes were cold and unblinking as they darted to the person left of her, her head cocking in almost an unsettling manner. she lacked basic people skills, growing up in a bloodthirsty, tyrannical kingdom. she was void of most pleasant and warming gestures that others were accustomed to and looked for in a conversation. an eery, tight smile pulled at the corners of her lips. “hello,” she said, her voice deep and unfeeling, “i’m arachne. of the vatican city.”
lifting from her seat almost immediately at the sight of someone she had yet to greet, chiara made little to no attempt to hide her want for popularity and need to be liked. in a hall of people vying to be queen, her priority was to be QUEEN BEE. approaching the other with confidence and extending her arm, she introduces herself, “ chiara. of liechtenstein. ” she’s not unfamiliar with the look and tone offered by the other, once having a long list of uncles who weren’t afraid to talk to her this way. regardless of her experience, she would never attempt to use these mannerisms on someone else. remaining WARM, just as she was trained, chiara raised both eyebrows in questioning, “ do you need help settling in ? you must be exhausted. gosh, i know i was when i first got it. ”
Maddox had taken to one of the rooms that he figured was so far off the beaten path that surely he wouldn’t be bothered, right? He’d just kicked his feet up on something he probably shouldn’t have went he heard the door creak open behind him. “Niloloko mo ba ako?!” He spoke, his native tongue slipping from his lips before he even realized what he was doing. Groaning in slight annoyance, he turned to look at the person standing in the doorway. “Can I help you, or are you just going to stand there and stare at me all day?”
chiara picked up the act of lone adventurer upon her arrival in füssenberg weeks ago, as it seemed much less SAD to play the exploring excuse than it did to admit she only went on these long walks to seek out company. though her desire to be entertained was always strong, she held no interest in annoying anyone. so there in the doorway she stood, face pressed against the frame, peering carefully into the room. “ well, that depends on what kind of business you’re planning on running out of here, ” she delivers the quip with a small smile, pleased with herself and unashamed. “ forgive me. this is clearly your hiding place, i’ll find my own. ”
The weather in Fussenberg had not been kind, and it was clear that the skies above were brewing as powerful winter as ever. Still, Iggy was wrapped in dozens of layers and pressed his gloves to his nose, his features beaming pink due to the cold conditions. He refused to sit inside where he’d have to talk to… people. Instead, he sat in the courtyard and watched the birds fight the freezing atmosphere, until a voice startled him, causing him to jump into the air. “ Ah ! I’m — I… I didn’t see you coming. Or hear you, you were like a ninja… ” Iggy was grateful for the chill that caused his lips to fuse together and prevent any more words awkwardly toppling out.
“ if you are cold, you should move inside, ” although she knew better than to overlook a formal greeting, she’s still shocked when the other startles. “ i’m sorry, ” and she honestly is, though she can’t help but laugh at the comment, “ actually, i’ve been told that a few times. ” she offers a sympathetic smile as she wraps her coat tighter around her, though she’s definitely not feeling the effects of the cold to her counterpart’s scale. perhaps it’s because she’s SURVIVED much worse in much less under command, but she’ll certainly pretend to relate to the other in this moment. she regains her previous train of thought after a bout of forced shivering, “ the birds will be here tomorrow, i’m sure. as will you be, frozen in place, if you do not go inside. ”
BRANDISHING A DECK OF CARDS, teo spread them out across the table in an artful flourish, face up. looking pensive for a moment, he flipped them over, again spreading them across the table, this time with the cards face down. letting out a thoughtful sound, he swipes them into his hands, shuffling the cards fluidly in a practiced motion. he repeats this process a few more times, looking all the part of a casino dealer – if only for the lack of a visor on his head and cigar smoke wafting around his face. finally, glancing up, he holds out the deck, spread once again in his hands. “ pick a card. ”
giving each card a look of careful consideration, she presses a single digit to pursed lips before reaching out to take her pick. “ queen of hearts, ” chiara reads, flipping the card without awaiting further instruction. she hasn’t realized she’s done anything wrong as she searches within herself for some kind of purpose to the game. “ oh ! queen of hearts, ” repeating herself, this time with a grin, voice lilted, “ just like me. ” the joke is sung and clear, but she would still feel the need to correct herself every time, “ well... PRINCESS of hearts. that’s what some people called me back home, ” of course, no one she knew from home would ever call her a queen. “ that’s very impressive. you’re very talented. ” her praise is exorbitant considering she still has no real understanding of the card trick she destroyed moments ago, but at least she’s GENUINELY amused.

Elizabeth had been reading when she heard steps approaching. The princess had no intentions of interacting with people today, in fact that was the one thing she had decide she would not be doing. Turning her head to the newcomer to the room, she repressed an eye roll. “Of all the rooms in this place you choose this one to come in to? I was really enjoying the silence and alone time.”
though she really didn’t want to allow the other to talk at all in that moment, she waited a few beats before responding, “ it’s okay. i certainly wouldn’t come HERE for a conversation. ” gracile arms raised a large, solid book out on display, wanting to give it an official announcement. “ it’s an encyclopedia, ” she states what may have been obvious, but this is only the second one she’s ever held. “ it’s very interesting. ” the weight of the book falls loudly on the table and she let’s out a quiet apology as she pulls in a chair to sit before it. chiara has only advanced a single page in her reading, the air already hosting a heavy scent of dust and old paper, when she goes back on her promise of no attempt at conversation. “ what are you reading ? ”
