Mika lowered his camera and took a deep breath. He needed to stay levelheaded or get a grip and finish the imaging so he could get to Yuu’s side. Mika was so distracted that he didn’t even notice that Kumizuki had approached him until the taller man pointed out, “You seem distracted. Did you get injured somewhere?”
“No, it’s just...After we met Yuu at the Masanori River he went back with the children in the ambulance. Meaning he’s at the hospital right now…”
“Where we believe the bomb is,” Kumizuki finished. “Have you tried to reach out him?”
Mika narrowed his eyes at the mortician, “Of course. I tried calling several times and it just keeps going to voicemail, and I’ve left him a half dozen texts. Why won’t he pick up? Is he in danger?”
“We haven’t received word that the hospital has gone up in flames yet, so you still have time. Focus on the task at hand. The sooner we finish here the faster you can get to the hospital.”
“Mika,” Sayuri reassured from the other side of the crime scene, “Yuu is a smart boy. He’ll be fine.”
“I hope so.” Lifting his camera, Mika’s hands were surprisingly steady, and he took another shot. After this case was finally closed, he was going to take a vacation—a long one.
Kumizuki nodded his head, “Based on the angle of these injuries I would definitely say that the murderer was Krul. She seemed to have been in a hurry to steal this victim’s clothing. Look, there’s a rash on his skin from the material of his uniform being harshly pulled off his body.”
Sayuri frowned into her camera, “Why did she need to kill and strip both of them? Couldn’t she have only stolen the uniform from one of them and ended up with the same result?”
“Maybe she hoped it would buy her some time,” Mika suggested photographing the rash.
Kumizuki nodded, “I agree. If I didn’t recognize them it would have led us down another rabbit hole.”
Leaning back on her heels, Sayuri asked, “And how did you recognize them?”
“I’m trying to keep my little sister off of my operating table so she’s a frequent visitor at the hospital. As much as I hate to admit it, she’s familiar with riding in an ambulance.”
“Is your sister at the hospital now,” Mika asked.
“Yeah.”
A hush fell over the scene and the only sound came was the snapping of their cameras. The dread was starting to pool in Mika’s stomach again at just how many lives would be lost if the hospital bomb went off. Thankfully, they were wrapping up their imaging and they could join the rest of the task force soon.
Suddenly, an officer raced over to them and breathlessly announced, “We just received a bulletin from the station! Apparently, someone has spotted Ferid Bathory. He was seen fleeing in the back of a car with the neighboring district license plate.”
