âOh Iâve missed you as well!â The petite Brit exclaimed happily, giving her friend a squeeze. âAnybody not as excited to see you as I am clearly isnât your true friend.â She joked with a giggle, pulling away. âWhereâve you been hiding all this time?â
âItâs good to feel missed.â he admitted lightly, he hadnât realized how much he truly meant to people around here. âSorry you had to miss me though.â he smiled, pulling away as she did and shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans. âI donât know about that, maybe just shocked that Iâm back or shocked that I left to begin with.â Levi suggested, not willing to admit that his friends werenât true. They meant the world to him, after all. They were the reason he had come back. âAround. Drove around a lot, really. Some friends and I got up to some stuff, nothing too interesting. How are things here?â
âYouâre telling me,â Lawson snorted, his head halfway stuck in the costume, âI myself am not smart enough to figure this thing out on my own. So if we break it or I get stuck, then itâs both of our heads on the line. WaitâŠget it? Heads on the line.â His laugh at his lame joke echoed through the hollowness of the headpiece.
Levi couldnât help but to laugh along with him. It was silly, maybe even borderline stupid. But, he still found it funny. âWeâll itâll be a lot easier to be the Headless Horseman without it anyway. We can each play the part, theyâd have it covered for two shifts.â he shrugged, light laughter still bubbling up as he did. He tugged the costume the rest of the way over Lawsonâs head, then examined him with his arms crossed over his chest. âI think thatâs right...â he raised an eyebrow. âLooks right to me.â
.
âOh really?â he asked, looking at the other, âI suppose being the new kid is no fun wherever you go, huh?â It wasnât so bad in university, there the newbies arrived in batches. Not that heâd made any friends, he was too busy working here. He followed behind and let out a breath, slumping his shoulders when they were alone, âItâs Frederic, nice to meet you. Can I ask your name?â he felt it only polite to return the question.
âI guess not.â he shrugged, jogging down the steps that led to the tunnels. âThere are closer break rooms, but some of them are pretty disgusting.â he admitted, with a short laugh to follow. âSure. Iâm Levi. Do you prefer to go by Frederic? Freddie, Fred, Ed?â he listed curiously, shoving the door to one of the break rooms open. âSome of the break rooms are better than others, youâll figure them all out eventually. Just donât wander too far just because you want a break room with video games and end up late your next meet and greet, weâve all done it at least once. Now, you can learn from our mistakes.â
âNo mother, Iâm not coming home to visit Iâm very busy. Ask Lawson⊠No! You know very well why and why your playing martyr isnât going to work. Goodbye.â He snapped the phone shut and looked up, âOh, Iâm sorry. I didnât know anyone was there.â
Levi shook his head, implying that it wasnât a problem. âNothing to apologize for, if anything I should apologize for... I donât know, invading your privacy I guess.â He hesitated, wondering whether or not he should continue. âYou alright?â
