“Oh I’ve missed you as well!” The petite Brit exclaimed happily, giving her friend a squeeze. “Anybody not as excited to see you as I am clearly isn’t your true friend.” She joked with a giggle, pulling away. “Where’ve you been hiding all this time?”
“It’s good to feel missed.” he admitted lightly, he hadn’t realized how much he truly meant to people around here. “Sorry you had to miss me though.” he smiled, pulling away as she did and shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “I don’t know about that, maybe just shocked that I’m back or shocked that I left to begin with.” Levi suggested, not willing to admit that his friends weren’t true. They meant the world to him, after all. They were the reason he had come back. “Around. Drove around a lot, really. Some friends and I got up to some stuff, nothing too interesting. How are things here?”
“You’re telling me,” Lawson snorted, his head halfway stuck in the costume, “I myself am not smart enough to figure this thing out on my own. So if we break it or I get stuck, then it’s both of our heads on the line. Wait…get it? Heads on the line.” His laugh at his lame joke echoed through the hollowness of the headpiece.
Levi couldn’t help but to laugh along with him. It was silly, maybe even borderline stupid. But, he still found it funny. “We’ll it’ll be a lot easier to be the Headless Horseman without it anyway. We can each play the part, they’d have it covered for two shifts.” he shrugged, light laughter still bubbling up as he did. He tugged the costume the rest of the way over Lawson’s head, then examined him with his arms crossed over his chest. “I think that’s right...” he raised an eyebrow. “Looks right to me.”
.
“Oh really?” he asked, looking at the other, “I suppose being the new kid is no fun wherever you go, huh?” It wasn’t so bad in university, there the newbies arrived in batches. Not that he’d made any friends, he was too busy working here. He followed behind and let out a breath, slumping his shoulders when they were alone, “It’s Frederic, nice to meet you. Can I ask your name?” he felt it only polite to return the question.
“I guess not.” he shrugged, jogging down the steps that led to the tunnels. “There are closer break rooms, but some of them are pretty disgusting.” he admitted, with a short laugh to follow. “Sure. I’m Levi. Do you prefer to go by Frederic? Freddie, Fred, Ed?” he listed curiously, shoving the door to one of the break rooms open. “Some of the break rooms are better than others, you’ll figure them all out eventually. Just don’t wander too far just because you want a break room with video games and end up late your next meet and greet, we’ve all done it at least once. Now, you can learn from our mistakes.”
“No mother, I’m not coming home to visit I’m very busy. Ask Lawson… No! You know very well why and why your playing martyr isn’t going to work. Goodbye.” He snapped the phone shut and looked up, “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone was there.”
Levi shook his head, implying that it wasn’t a problem. “Nothing to apologize for, if anything I should apologize for... I don’t know, invading your privacy I guess.” He hesitated, wondering whether or not he should continue. “You alright?”
