Summary: Mikasa gets a surprise when looking through newly developed family photos

Nearly every inch of the walls and shelves in the Ackerman household were filled with photos of their daughter. The couple was gifted with a new style of camera shortly before her birth, and Mikasa had taken every moment available to learn how to use it properly. The images needed to be taken to a special facility to be developed, but she deemed the hours spent learning worth it when they got the first set back.

Chapter 8 of Figure You Out is up!

Summary: Levi and Mikasa wake up in the hospital, and the latter struggles to recall the events leading up to the accident.

Chapter 8: Broken Inside and Out

Flashes of light and distant, muffled voices were the first thing to crawl through the thick, anesthesia-induced haze clouding Levi’s mind. Next was an odd heaviness in his left leg, though he couldn’t really feel much of anything below his waist. When the lights dimmed enough that he could finally open his eyes, his vision was nearly as clouded as his brain. Even when he rubbed most of the blurriness away, he had to blink a few times before he fully believed what he saw by the window in the corner of the room. Flowers.

Summary: Based on the prompt: moment of connection with a rival; seeing them get ready to sleep in their car after losing their home

After a particularly nasty day at work, Mikasa’s bad day only gets worse when her car—which also serves as her bed—refuses to start.

Ever since she was old enough to understand the concept of money, Mikasa Ackerman had been saving every penny she could find. With any luck, one day she would save up enough to escape the living hell that was her family. Hardly a day of her life passed under their roof without someone screaming, something being broken, with the worst days ending with someone being taken to the ER. She got her first job at a fast-food chain at sixteen, working every shift she could, riding her bike or taking some form of public transport when her parents were too strung out to drive her. Once she was done with school at eighteen, she was able to take on the higher-paying night shifts, setting everything she could until she finally saved enough for a decent down payment on a new car. Technically it was a used car, but it was new to her, and most importantly, it was owned by her, finally giving her a way out. She’d rather sleep in her car than spend another night under the same roof as her parents. Not many apartments were willing to sign a lease with someone so young, anyway.

Summary: Already reeling from how they parted the night before, Levi’s torment only worsens when Mikasa’s late for work, and the snow’s only getting worse.

A night of light snowfall made for an eerily quiet morning as Levi continued his run, having started long before the first of the sun’s rays crept over the treeline. The exposed skin on his face and hands stung against the cold, but his slip in composure with the damn brat the evening before had kept him wound up almost the entire night. He’d be a mess if he didn’t do some form of stress relief before seeing her again. He should’ve left it alone when he found her after an obvious crying spell, but it only took him a moment to string together what— rather who— was the cause of it, having heard some of her conversation with Olivia.  Really, that was more of a reason for him to leave it alone, but then he’d caught her watching him with those big, sad eyes and he couldn’t stop himself when she asked what he was thinking. “It's a certain someone that’s got you feeling overwhelmed.” “I don’t really want to talk about it.” All the more reason for you to mind your fucking business, Levi thought, gritting his teeth as the winter air burned his lungs. He’d sent her to the kitchen for her own good, and in part to put some distance between them. Seeing her so emotional was rare, and knowing it was caused by the one person who should be her safe space infuriated him. Annoying as the whole thing had been… Mikasa really did light up during that damn surprise party. And her reaction to his gift— when had she last smiled that big? He was certain his heart was going to burst through his chest. As far as he was aware, the rest of the evening had gone well. So what the fuck happened after Jean took her home?

Hi Helena! Such an honor to get your ask! I shared one snippet the other day but here's another one!

The following day, Mikasa was astounded to find a cart attached to their horses.  “I’m not letting you bounce up and down on horseback,” was Levi’s explanation.  “So I bounce on a cart instead?”  Levi huffed. “I need you to recover a.s.a.p., so the more you rest, the better. You can lie down on that,” he said, patting the blankets he’d already spread on the cart. She looked about to protest, but she changed subject.  “Where did you even get it?”  “Barracks at Trost’s Gate.” Levi finished setting their stuff on the cart. “I told them about the mission and that you were sick, it’s a legit loan.”  “For a bogus mission.”  Levi turned around to snap at her, but held his tongue on seeing Mikasa’s amused expression.  “Thank you, Levi” she added. “Sorry—Captain.”  “Tch. Levi’s fine, we’re not really on duty.” He’d never cared about formalities anyway.  It was almost dark when they arrived at the army hut they were to stay over at, if one could call it a hut. It was more of an empty, abandoned tool shed: no fireplace, no windows, just a tiny hole near the eaves for ventilation. Levi cursed the map makers, “aren’t they supposed to update this stuff?!” but set himself to work right away, setting a campfire and telling off Mikasa every time she tried to lift anything heavier than the cans of soup they’d have for supper. She wasn’t able to stay put anymore than Levi did, though, so he let her take the sleeping bags to the shed and roll them out—gently.
