The Friends of Eddie Coyle premiered in New York City on 26 June 1973.

Producer Paul Monash adapted George V. Higgins' 1970 novel, and Peter Yates directed.

Despite positive reviews, the film failed to find an audience when it was released and didn't even earn enough to cover the modest $3 million budget (about $20 million in today's value).

The Friends of Eddie Coyle's reputation has grown over the years (due to a terrific script, great performances - especially by Robert Mitchum - and great direction) and it is now considered not only one of the best crime films of the 1970s, but one of the best crime films of all time.

Very good family drama, beautifully acted, with a lot of restraint. It weaves together a lot of generations.

But this is not a genre I like, so I can't say I enjoyed watching it.
