What kind of hawk is this? A Ridgway’s Hawk (I painted in 2013). Haven’t heard of them before? You’re not alone. Most people don’t even know this hawk exists, which is tragic because we may live to see it go extinct. There are less than 300 individuals left in the world. It is critically endangered. Because the world’s population lives in such a small area, a single devastating hurricane could wipe them out for good. The situation is that dire. It is from the Dominican Republic (Los Haitises National Park holds the majority of the world’s breeding birds), and like most endangered animals, there are many factors contributing to its decline, including but not limited to: loss of habitat and misguided prejudice from people that mistakenly think these raptors pose a threat to domestic poultry. In reality, these birds have been documented to have a diet of over 95% small reptiles and are not known to actively hunt birds (see fun fact below). Sauce: http://www.peregrinefund.org/explore-raptors-species/Ridgway’s_Hawk#sthash.ryIJi5tW.dpbs Groups like The Peregrine Fund are working hard to study and save this species, and to spread education and respect for the sake of the hawks. In some really awesome news, The Peregrine Fund’s Ridgway’s Hawk Project was just granted a Disney Conservation Fund Award! You can help these guys by donating directly or just spreading the word! FUN FACT: This hawk often builds its nest right on top of an active nest of the Palm Chat, the national bird of Dominican Republic. The hawks add larger twigs on top of the existing Palm Chat nest, without causing any harm to the smaller birds nesting below. It’s like a two-story building for birds! (from The Peregrine Fund site)
Deer snoots! Never realized there was so much variety in deer noses. Studies from photos.
This will be a painting when I have the time.
Pensive
Finished this painting a while ago (months ago…)— but getting a proper photo of it has been a huge pain in the ass. This is the first oil painting that Simul (us!) truly finished together.
And now because we can’t stand looking at it anymore— we are also looking to sell it!
The painting is beautiful— it is just taking up too much space in our studio and needs a home. Also we could really use some money to pay off school loans and living expenses.
If you are interested in buying this painting, things you should know:
-Original painting in oil
-Size: 18x24inches on raised wooden panel (see photo). Ready to hang!
-Although this is an oil painting, a thick layer of resin has been added to the top of this piece, thus giving the painting a glassy, smooth surface.
Price: We are looking for $500 or best offer for the finished painting. We do not ship internationally (outside the US) unless you’re willing to deal with the heavy expense of shipping outside our country.
Interested in the sketch?
-The sketch is 18x24in in size.
-We are seeking $300 for the sketch, but we will take best offers.
Want to buy both?
-We will sell both for a discounted price of $700 or best offer.
Shirk posing. His feathers have become a wee bit more ridiculous. Just hope I never enter “frillback pigeon” territory.
He does have other faces, and I’ll show them at some point, but they’re all… scary.
