“in my defence…” you start, awkwardly shrugging your shoulder and scratching at your cheek, “i’m redecorating..? not the best time to invite company over, i know. but i wasn’t exactly thinking about that when i said to you.” you suck in your lip and offer her what can only be presumed as a hopeful smile. you know, you know, your place could certainly use a touch up, but you didn’t want to make a bad impression either. and defence, it seemed, was the way to go about that. “but i’m all ears for improvements. you want to share some of that knowledge? i could use it.”

Lexie let out a rather light sigh, she could at least relate to inviting people over in the middle of redecorating chaos. “The first rule of inviting people over in the middle of redecorating is not to let them know you’re redecorating,” She offered as she gestured to the area. “Another thing, is when hosting, get a variety of snacks for guests. Maybe even a cheese platter with some cured meats or a simple veggie or vegan platter. On the upside, the books do make it seem more homey.”

Ellie bit her lip at the woman’s comment and didn’t say anything. What could she say to that? That she was the woman those two men had been fighting for? No way. Sometimes it was better to remain silent, as her mother would say. She pulled out the chair to take a seat and waved at a waiter, asking for a tropical juice.”It’s fine, I’m just waiting for someone.” she waved a hand at her words. She was just making time to meet another client who wanted a tarot cardd reading in a more open space than her shop, which was fine by her. She also did house calls if the client wanted to. 

At the woman’s silence, Lexie was tempted to narrow her eyes in suspicion--okay, perhaps her face was quite loud and they did narrow in suspicion. She must know them in some way, but, she’d stick by what she said. She was unapologetic when it came to the cold, hard truth. “Ah, well, they do say today’s an excellent day for making deals, so, cheers to whatever that endeavor may be,” She offered as she took a blueberry macaron and took a bite into it.

Evie plucked the cookies and creme macaron from the platter that they’d been sharing and scrolled through an article on her laptop while Lexie read through her newspaper. “You’re like, one of the few people our age who still reads the paper copies of the newspaper. I do do some work for the traditional press, so I can’t complain,” Evie commended, adjusting her glasses as she read. Seasonal allergies made her life a bit difficult at times when it came to wearing contact lenses, but she knew that Lexie wouldn’t judge. “Oooh, more drama,” the publicist stated gleefully, clapping her hands. “Nothing compared to the gala, though. Two men were fighting over a woman in the middle of the dance floor. I was just minding my business and hanging out with Beck, then I see people throwing punches. It was glorious, honestly.”

Lexie took a bite of her strawberry macaron and chuckled. “It’s a deep South thing, I’ve come to realize. We’d read our newspapers and silently judge the rest of the townsfolk from our porches and mutter ‘bless their heart’ under their breath--well, I wasn’t shy on saying it out loud,” she explained with a wistful look. She felt for Evie as the woman had adjusted her glasses, allergy season was truly at its peak. “I live for the drama as long as I’m not involved,” She teased. “Wait, what?!” She laughed, shaking her head. “It’s like grade school all over again. Do you know who they were fighting for? Was she even attractive?”

This was déjà vu, just with another person ; just before it happened there was this vague sense of familiarity the washed over Bellamy as she walked outside out of C'est La Vie to pass off an order to another customer, sitting outside on the patio of the bakery. Just seconds before she turned she knew that this had happened before and she could predict her next move only a millisecond before it happened. Though, as recognizable as the scene was all those weeks ago when she was with Jon, she felt differently this time around. Needless to say, Bellamy was not in the mood to have two grown adults arguing in front of her establishment, disturbing her peaceful customers. 

Setting a perfectly puffy croissant on the customers table, it’s not long before she turns her attention. ❛ – - Oi! ❜ The blonde snaps - accent always sharper when upset - at the two in front of her shop, grabbing their attention immediately. ❛ Why not mind your manners and take it somewhere else, yeah? ❜ With grumbles, the pair walk elsewhere, somewhere down the street and Bellamy shakes her head, refocusing her attention on Alexandra. ❛ You aren’t wrong about that, but I would much rather any arguments not be held in front of my bakery, ❜ She arches a brow, making her point. Bellamy has a number of good focal points as to why she didn’t want strangers yelling in front of her establishment. For one, it brought back too many harsh memories. Quickly, the blond moves on with softer vocals, ❛ How are your macarons? ❜

This was where the amusement came in upon seeing a blonde snapping at the two arguing men and Lexie watched as it was handled. Sure, she should be focusing more on reading up on stocks or local news in the paper, but she couldn’t help but be slightly amused. After all, sometimes it just passed the time, as much as she often complained about it. Looking over to the woman she nodded, “Of course, I mean, it’s just a bunch of fools making bad business. It’d be annoying for any business owner, really.” Taking another bite of the macaron she grinned, “They’re scrumptious, thank you. Compliments to the chef today, on a day like this, it’s what I needed.”

“I’ve seen worse,” Ellie commented, thinking about the fight that had been the talk of the city a few days ago. A fight that involved her, her ex and her best friend, but she had to stop thinking about that or she would never move on. One of her customers had asked for a reasing at this place so she came and it was a delightful surprise. There were a few empty tables when she finsiehd but she discovered this were reserved for some VIP clients and moved on to another one, biting her lip and asking the woman if the seat empty next to her was taken. “All the other tables will so be full.”

“You mean the elementary travesty from the charity event? Please, this is much more amusing than that, they’re actually having a tiff about something practical, which is money, and not over a person. God, makes me glad that I left early, but also grateful that Evie filled me in on the whole thing. If I could pity them, I would, but, we’re all adults and this isn’t the playground anymore,” Lexie shrugged taking another bite from her macaron. At the woman’s request for the empty seat, she waved her hand to signal her to go ahead. “I won’t promise that I’m the best company, take what you will from that.”

The one thing Alexandra loved about every other Thursday was that they were her Fridays and this week, was that week. As a little pick me up, she was going to treat herself to a few macarons and sitting out on the patio to enjoy some sunshine while reading the newspaper and that was exactly what she did. Now here she was, a few pages in when she noticed a disturbance in front of her causing her eyes to slowly move from the page to two quarreling idiots in the street. “God, it truly wouldn’t be Monleon if there weren’t idiots fighting in the middle of the street,” She mused to no one in particular.

‘’If i die of alcohol poisoning tonight, just know i kinda expected it and totally deserved it’’ Vega muttered as she raised the glass to her lips again, squinting as the liquid trickled down her throat keeping the buzz alive that was working to keep her numb. Letting her hazel orbs flicker to the clock she squints in her drunken state. Was that really the time? A laugh falls from her lips as she raises the Moet Champagne bottle in the air. 

Who really cared?

‘’I shouldn’t be drunk at 3 pm but alas, here we are…’’ Vega slurs as she stands from her chair, and begins to pace around the room realising she probably looked a mess, causing a scene which was unlike her but the release had been needed after the week she’d had. 

‘’Everyone should join in.’’ She pouts. Was she really that bad she thinks before stumbling over her own feet. ‘’Oops!’’ a giggle slipping from her lips. This was her own bar and it was practically empty, it had been all day, which meant that she’d had free rain to let her hair down.

Alexandra was clearly too sober for the antics of the woman beside her. She took a sip of her own drink before turning back to the woman. Her eyes filled with pity. Normally, she would’ve let the woman drink herself into a further stupor, but here she was saying, “Maybe you should switch to water?” She offered, while still sipping her own drink. “Oh, I’m just having this one drink before I have to get back to a board meeting,” She shrugged. “But, if you want to drink yourself well into happy hour, no one’s stopping you, although, would you really want to wind up in the hospital for a few hours of a ‘good time’?”

“i didn’t really know what to put out? i don’t have guests round that often.. oh and uh, excuse the mess, i’m halfway through re-organising this room, so there’s kind of books everywhere..” light smile touches your features as you exhale, fluster beginning to die out and cheeks returning to their usual rosiness. you hadn’t been lying, guests over was a rarity, so this was nice. different. a feat you could perhaps get used to. “so we have a bowl of peanuts and some crisps-” you point and cock your head, “chips. peanuts and chips. i have wine in the fridge too.” you kick your shoes off, getting two glasses and the bottle, returning to comfortably settle on the couch before pouring. “can you tell it’s been a while since i’ve had someone new here?” gentle smirk catches at the corners of your lips and you lift a brow, sliding one of the glasses across the table, “i can assure you i usually come across a little cooler than this.”

Lexie raised an eyebrow at the area, noticing that the woman in front of her was definitely a newcomer--or just very rusty--at hosting, between the books scattered everywhere, the peanuts and--chips? This was definitely going to be an interesting evening. “Wow,” She nodded trying her best to put on a polite smile that didn’t come off as a grimace. “So,” Lexie cleared her throat a little, “When was the last time you had company over again? I mean, don’t get me wrong it’s a start, but so many more improvements can always be made, you know?”

OPEN STARTER @ THE MONLEON MEMORIAL GALA.

Rumors were scuttled around Atticus on East for weeks before the Gala, and yet whilst Emilia claimed to be immune to the curiosity that gripped her coworkers with the strength and might of Zeus, she had to admit–– she wondered, too, who would be catering the massive event. It wasn’t until the day prior that the restaurant’s name, a rival to the establishment she worked at, was splashed on the front cover of the local paper. She carefully examined the seemingly endless trays of food being passed around, raising her brow in appraisal at one shrimp cocktail that came her way. She comments to the individual beside her, “Monleon knows how to throw a 1920s extravaganza. Cocktails, Oysters Rockefeller’s, deviled eggs… I couldn’t have done it better myself.” There’s an embittered twist in her heart at the thought. “Think we’ll see blood at the auction?” 

If there was one thing Alexandra couldn’t help to love about parties, it was the endless food. Tonight was the night, aside the drinking that was to ensue, she’d be dipping her hands here and there to any type of food that came her way. The deviled eggs were an obvious classic, but they were nothing like her grandmother’s, the cocktails, however, were to die for. “Tell me about it,” She mused with a smirk. “The cocktails are exquisite, although my Grandma Nora could make way better deviled eggs than these. They’re missing the paprika sprinkle on top and--the filling isn’t even made with miracle whip, which is the secret to the best tasting egg,” She added as she took a sip of her champagne. “God, I hope so. Seeing a little blood would make it all the more fun, after all.”

Wyatt was completely out of his element that night, knowing that it probably showed. He supported local fundraising initiatives, but his teaching salary did not leave a lot of disposable income for attending charity galas - the only reason he was in attendance that night was because a colleague had given him her ticket after she fell sick. After texting the babysitter for the fifth time that night to check in on Noelle, Wyatt plucked another champagne flute from a passing server. “Have you tried any of the cocktails yet? If so, what would you recommend?” he casually asked the person next to him near the bar. He was usually a beer drinker, at least when he did go out for a pint or two. But there was a long list of cocktails, keeping with the 1920′s theme -  Sidecar, The Southside, French 75 to name a few. There was the usual Old Fashioned on the menu, but this was his opportunity to explore different options rather than getting the safe one.

Lexie looked over the list of cocktails with the utmost precision. The night was going well for the most part, but she knew that she was way too sober for the evening that was to come. The one that kept really bringing her back had to be the French 75, she remembered trying it at her first 20s themed party and it was definitely the wonderful poison to make the night more fun. At the man’s question, she looked over to him and pointed exactly to her favorite. “The French 75 is the best you’ll ever try. I tried it a long time ago, granted, but, that’s the cocktail you’d have if you want to have a fun night. The Southside is a little more--dramatic and the Sidecar’s rather basic,” She added.

Evie’s facial expression was rather blank as she danced with her partner, a colleague of her father’s that had always taken somewhat of a liking to the middle Rhodes child. “Mhm, Travis,” she responded nonchalantly as he complimented her on her ravishing beauty - ironically, the same beauty that he made fun of her for using when she was into pageantry. She had to resist every urge to slap him in the middle of the dance floor in the middle of all the gala’s attendees, but thankfully the song ended. Before Travis could ask for other dance, Evie quickly spotted someone out of the corner of her eye. “Sorry, gotta catch up with my friends,” she told him apologetically, faking a contrite smile as she sauntered off and joined the person she had seen. “How’s it going?” she asked, her lips pursed as she saw Travis still observing her movements. “Just came over to say hi - and to avoid a persistent dance partner,” she stated nonchalantly, looking at her chosen company. You better play along, the brunette thought.

Here was Alexandra drinking champagne and having her judgy eyes scanning the room already. She already brushed off a few men, walking away and rolling her eyes in exasperation at the simple dictionary compliments, “stunning”, “gorgeous”, “elegant”. She was beginning to grow bored. Spotting Evie on the dance floor, however, she lit up. Finally, one of her closest friends was in attendance which meant the fun was just about to begin. “Well, I’m sure Travis won’t mind if I steal you away for a few moments, right?” She asked as she eyed Travis in a very intimidating way as she took the woman’s arm to lead her away. “I’ve tried at least--3 different types of champagne this evening, care to accompany me?”

Evie spent forever deliberating between a molten lava cake and tiramisu while Lexie ordered, eventually deciding to go with a lemon meringue tartlet from the display menu. She awkwardly stood with her dessert in her hand, not wanting to eat until Lexie had also been served. “That’s what you get for ordering the complicated things on the menu,” Evie teased, craning her neck to get a better view. “They’re arguing over whose wife is better - boooooring. I was hoping for some drama, a cheating scandal. Something more entertaining than this,” she whined, furrowing her brow as they kept going. She made a show of drumming her fingers impatiently against the display counter, narrowing her eyes at the kitchen staff. “Gotta drop the hints that you’re impatient and not someone to fuck with.”

“There was a two-for-one special, besides, I need to self-indulge before the midweek mayhem of finding a dress for the gala,” Lexie chuckled, taking another glance at her watch, her brow slightly furrowing at the text message that came up. Another meeting, glorious. “Are you serious? Over that? Ugh. When is there going to be some drama around Monleon?” She whined. “You’re right, that is something we need to see. A cheating scandal, ooh, or my absolute favorite, a dramatic, ‘heart-wrenching’ breakup. Those are always my favorite,” She mused with a smile. “I was tempted into leaning onto the counter, but I’m still a little bit of a germaphobe after that stomach virus went around the office, but--” She raised her voice slightly making sure the bickering chefs in earshot heard her, “If I’m late for my next meeting, I might have to take my business elsewhere. Like Starbucks.”

I deserve this little pick me up. Lexie thought to herself as she bought herself a crème brûlée to go. It was her favorite dessert that she often indulged on during stressful times, and this was one of those days. Glancing down at her Apple watch, she semi-patiently waited for them to prepare when she overheard a commotion towards the back. Turning to the woman next to her she says, “Today of all days the chefs want to have a row about their wives while the rest of us out here look like idiots waiting. It has to be Tuesday.”
