Book Review: Weave the Liminal by Laura Tempest Zakroff
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I begin every book on witchcraft with a healthy dose of skepticism. I’m ready for a lot of woo, or pages and pages of prescribed rituals or spells with only fluff in between to hold it all together, or self-important stories about what a skillful witch or diviner or medium the author is. Never having read Zakroff’s earlier work, I began this book in the same fashion. I was, however, delighted to be wrong.

Well, adding this to the reading list!
Potions or not?
It really depends on what you are trying to achieve. For example, for beauty potions, sometimes they are better as drinkable potions, so it can go directly to our system and work to get our skin much smoother or a shiny hair. Tho, applied its great too! Like natural aloe vera products you can do yourself!
So it all depends on what you prefer.
*You have to very careful with drinkable potions. DO NOT drink any potion you do not know what it has or how its made.

Historically Sacred Items/Offerings to each of the Ouranic Theoi! I made this for my Hellenic polytheism group on discord, so I thought I’d share this information with all of you as well.
All information has been taken from theoi.com as well as various historical books on the gods, and I have decided to make this powerpoint so that other people don’t have to sift through all the pdfs and books themselves.

Ways to Celebrate Pretty Much Every Pagan Holiday
(And most of these work no matter how discreet you have to be!)
Food- No holiday is complete without a feast! Have a potluck, try a new recipe in the kitchen, or just contemplate your usual dinner and be thankful that you have food. Lots of sabbats have popular recipes or ingredients that you could try making, or incorporate those types of foods into your meals.
Spend Time Outdoors- Have a picnic, go on a walk, or just sit on a chair and observe nature for a little while. Feel the air and observe how the seasons have changed.
Pay it Forward- Celebrate family, do something nice for your friends, or volunteer in your community. Go out and help people. ‘Tis the season!
Clean and Cleanse- A lot of holidays focus on some type of new beginnings. Clean your space and cleanse yourself of any residual energies you may be holding onto. Getting everything tidy and organized is a great way to give yourself a foundation for the coming year, no matter when that year begins!
Self Reflect- Think about where you were 365 days ago. How much you’ve grown, what you’ve gained and lost, what lessons you have been taught. What are your goals for the future? What is your next step?
Regular Worship- If you have any deities that you regularly interact with, consider giving them an offering and thanking them for just being a part of your life.
In regards to research:
Don’t accept witchcraft books for history. Read history texts.
Don’t accept witchcraft books for mental processes. Read psychology and biological texts.
Don’t accept witchcraft books for mythology. Don’t accept witchcraft books for religion. Read original texts and papers written researchers credited in their fields.
Use witchcraft books for witchcraft, and witchcraft alone. That is what they specialize in and what they are published for. If it branches out into a different subject, be suspicious and research the topic later.
I finally found it, some of the best noob advice I ever got
Your Spells Aren’t Working?
🎐 Baby Witch Tip #1 🔮
If you’re having trouble with or doubting your crafts effectiveness, there are a couple of questions you can ask yourself:
Whats my source? 📜
Well chances are if you got it off Tumblr, Pinterest, or the first page of Google…its crap. This isnt to say there aren’t exceptions but generally the mass of the online community seems to have hopped in bed with the idea that everything is arbitrary. Dont have a full moon? Do it whenever you want! Don’t have a candle? Use plastic! Don’t have moon water prepared? Just grab some Deer Park bottled water! The fact of the matter is, while witchcraft is constantly evolving and adapting there are just some things that work and some that don’t. Not everything is buzzing with magical energy and no two things have the same energy or effect. Emoji spells, jars of random things from your kitchen, and YouTube “chants to turn yourself into a werewolf” just aren’t going to cut it if you’re looking to make some serious magic. Think of it like cooking. Honey, agave, and stevia are all fine substitutes for sugar. But if you’re trying to make a rich chocolate chip cookie with dark brown sugar and you use stevia instead… You will not get the same cookie. No matter how much intention you put into it. The things you use matter. Tumblr likes to think you can just add more milk and not bake the cake and its basically the same thing as long as you put a lot of intent into it? Try serving that at a wedding.
Alternative sources include books by well known members of various witch communities (I.e. an herbalist/green witch might read Judika Illes). Thats not to say books and websites cant be trusted unless famous, but when youre a baby witch go with the most popular then work your way in as your BS radar and sense of self get stronger. But the best source will always be elders, reach out and try find pagans in your community. We’re a sneaky lot but we are out there. For eons, magick has been passed down through generations. I personally believe in the prowess of a magickal bloodline but many these days are the first of their line to pick up the craft and that’s okay. Plenty people who are born swimmers lose to people who are passionate. But what both need is guidance and training.
2. How strong is my mind? 💪
A witch is only as good as their intuition and if you’ve just googled love spells, went out and bought the pink candles, and plopped down to seduce Chad The Almighty then Im afraid that might not go well dear. While a good spell is a great help, ultimately items are simply there to aid, amplify, and channel your ability. If you are hasty or a poor listener then you wont go very far.
Meditation (of all kinds) is the best way to train your brain. If you can quiet your mind and channel your spirit then you stand a chance to make a potent spell with minimal aid. But this takes YEARS of practice. Hang in there.
3. Am I REALLY prepared? 🎓
Have you been meditating? How many books have you read? Have you been taking good care of your body? Do you have the right spell? The right enviroment? Are you taking your time? Have you taken moments to listen to the world around you and observe what the universe might be trying to tell you? Are you sure a spell is needed? Is the timing right?
If you feel like somethings just not clicking, then the answer is no- youre not prepared. Magic is intuitive and when its right its right. You’ll know.
Never. Ever. Ever. Rush into magic unprepared. If you force yourself down the throat of the universe, it will shit you out.
4. What am I contributing? 🔁
I’m not fluffy bunny. Every great teacher I’ve ever known, read, listened to, or heard of has made sure to make one thing very clear everything has a price. If you are drawing from within that means your personal energy, strength, happiness, safety, or more depending on the spell and intensity. Objects can help a lot with this, thats why spell ingredients aren’t arbitrarily thrown about and exchanged. If you work with spirits or dieties or other beings of any kind, then you must contribute back to them. Its a relationship, not a charity. If you want your house spirit to protect you, then you must get to know that house and treat it in a way that pleases it. If you want a spirit to bring you love, it might want offerings of honey or milk.
I mean, imagine this: You’re a rich bank owner and someone shows up and bangs on your door. They tell you they want you to bring them money and bring it now, here are some rocks that remind them of money, they’re holding a green candle. Would you just give it to them? Probably not. But if it was a friend, or if the person came with a gift, you might share just a little bit.
5. Does this even need magic? 🔨
You wanna drop 20lbs? Dont do a spell. You wanna find true love? Dont do a spell. You wanna make sure you dont burn your pastry? Dont do a spell.
Instead do spells that motivate you to go to the gym or choose that healthy meal. Do spells that make you a more confident and comfortable person so that you arent so worried about meeting the one. Do spells that help you show love to your bakes so that you know just when they are ready to come out.
And most of all, mundane before magical. Plenty of people live perfectly good lives without a single chant or gemstone. Make sure you are doing what you can, and the powers that be might just take a fancy and help you out even when you dont ask for it.
If you get nothing else out of this, the main thing I encourage you to do is READ READ READ.
Happy Casting

A Brief Word about Familiars
I received a question yesterday asking for books on familiars. I found I could only recommend one - a high-quality, dry, academic text that costs about $40. So I tried to find posts about familiars here on Tumblr.
I wish I hadn’t. I was like…
But then I took a moment and decided to write a little blurb to set the story straight.
So let me start by saying that this is not the core of my practice. I have a familiar spirit. I will not talk about Him at length here for reasons you can probably gather. We do stuff together. Not that much stuff together, over all. But I know a few things about familiars so let’s do this.
Despite the popular conception here on Tumblr, familiars are not pets. That is, they are not physical animals you can buy at an animal shelter or a pet store. Your cat is not a familiar. Your dog is not a familiar. Your chinchilla/snake/tarantula/lizard/whatever is not a familiar.
A familiar is a nonhuman spirit acquired by a witch. It may take the guise of a human, an animal, or an otherworldly being. Though it may occasionally resemble an animal, it is not, strictly speaking, an animal. Gaining a familiar was often part of the initiation process. When it was not part of initiation, obtaining a familiar sometimes mirrored the initation process in that it was often done through a major spirit (i.e. the Devil) or through another witch.
In times gone by, having a familiar spirit was one of the criteria for being a witch. According to the Witchcraft Act of 1604, possessing or communing with a familiar spirit was a crime punishable by death. It was one of the major markers of witch-dom.
During the New England Witch Hysteria, sightings of familiar spirits were used as evidence against the accused parties. Tituba, in her confession, claimed that the witches of Salem used a variety of familiar spirits to cause harm to others. These spirits included black dogs and foxes, as well as a hog and most notably, a yellow bird. During the trials, the afflicted girls of Salem Village claimed to see a yellow bird that bit and attacked them. Tituba also claimed that the accused Sarah Osbourne possessed a creature unlike anything seen on this earth. Her familiar spirit had a woman’s head and wings.
In the early modern period, these spirits would have been given to witches by the Devil as part of their pact with him. Modern witches working in the traditional paradigm who wish to acquire familiars would be wise to seek his wisdom on the subject.
Familiar spirits were said to pass along family lines, too, as was magical capability in general. It was fairly common, in Salem and abroad, for the family members of witches to be accused of witchcraft themselves, namely the daughters and husbands of accused witches. A witch, according to the belief of the day, could gift her familiar spirit to her daughter or to another family member. This is the another way to obtain a familiar spirit.
Most of the witches I have spoken to have obtained their familiars through others. Emma Wilby describes another way witches obtained familiars - sometimes they just pop up. A witch will be traveling through the country or will be in a moment of great need and a familiar will appear to help them.
So what do familiars do and why would you want one?
A familiar can act as a witch’s servant. If you wish to harm someone, you may send your familiar (perhaps in the guise of an animal) to attack them. Been attacked by a crow? Hounded by a black dog? Scratched by a strange cat? Could be a familiar. This prevents the witch from getting her hands dirty. If the witch appears as a spectre, sitting on someone’s chest, it is immediately obvious who is causing the attack. If a witch sends a yellow bird to bite her victims, there is room for doubt.
Familiars, being spiritual beings themselves, possess a magic all their own. They can lend their assistance to magical works. Like any other spirit, they can put their power into a spell. Without going deep into the subject, some familiars are more, well, familiar with certain kinds of magic than others. They possess both knowledge and power.
According to Emma Wilby, the use of familiar spirits is linked to the reminents of shamanic practice in early modern Europe. If we accept the idea that witches “flew” via shamanic journeying, the popular image of the witch flying with her cat-familiar makes sense. The familiar spirit can protect and guide the witch through the spirit world. Being a spirit itself, this is terrain the familiar spirit knows. The familiar spirit is not just a helper, but also a teacher.
Familiars can do pretty neat things, too. Despite its flaws, the popular series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” shows this fairly well. When Sabrina is in trouble, her familiar spirit, Salem, protects her. A familiar spirit can also act as a witch’s protector. They can devour curses and ward the home.
Familiars do require upkeep and regular offerings. Historically, these offerings would have been blood. When initiated, witches were given witches’ marks. These sometimes acted as teats from which spirits could draw blood from the witch. Blood (of any kind) is a good offering. In modern times, a bit of wine or milk often suffices.
One kind of familiar I do not wish to discuss here (because this post is already waaaay longer than I intended) is the plant familiar. Plants (especially mandrakes) can work like familiars. Do a Google dive. You’ll find something.
So that’s the tea on familiars. In summation,
They’re even in our phones now I’m done being nice lol

5 myths and misconceptions about astral travel
1. Your body can get possessed: this was one of my main concerns when I first started travelling, but it turns out no bad spirits or entities can harm you, they will only try to scare you so if you ask for protection before you begin travelling you and your body will be safe
2. You can get lost: A HUGE misconception is that you will loose your body and be stuck in the astral world forever but when you travel you will have a long cord that attaches you to your body no matter where you go, so you can follow it back to yourself when you are ready to return. everyone sees different colors for their cords, some are white others can be silver and some even gold.
3. The astral world always looks exactly the same as the world we live in: The astral world can look many ways such as magickal or space like and can even sometimes look like the world around us.
4. It’s not real, it’s just a dream: A lot of people believe it’s just a vivid dream you have but it’s not, it is indeed real. Your soul leaves your body which is why when you wake up the memories are extremely vivid and you feel wide awake.
5. There is only demons and negative entities in the astral world: In the astral world you can encounter many beautiful things like other astral travellers, celestial being, gods, goddesses, guides, angels and even deceased people that you can engaged many fun and joyful activities with, even sex! You can encounter bad spirits but just ask for protection and raise your vibration and they will leave you alone.
Just remember guys if you do practice astral projection or decide to after reading this post to stay safe and protected just in case! If you are not confident do some more research before jumping into it and ask for the protection of your guides and angels whilst you travel, but most importantly… HAVE FUN!
