Alex once called him a sorcerer, and I think that's the term that best fits him, because I don't believe we ever see him use a spellbook or anything like that. He doesn't even recite incantations when he casts spells, the only books he uses are potion books, since his main activity seems to be concocting them.
For me, he was born with magical powers, you mentioned his ancestor, so it's even canon, but I think he learned to make potions from books so maybe he didn't need to go to a magic school or something.
In french they almost always call him "Sorcier" which is translated to sorcerer. But sometimes he's called "magicien".
Babacara for example is called "Sorcière" (witch) everytime. But I think she is just a wingless fairy because in season one Twinkle called her a "wicked fairy".
Basically, my theory is that when fairies have their wings torn off, they automatically turn into witches, their skin becomes grayish and their pupils darken.
Over time, they turn evil because they can no longer use white magic, so they have no choice but to turn to black magic, which is inherently evil and corrupts their minds.
To sum thing up we have :
Twinkle -> white magic -> Good
Babacara -> black magic -> Bad
Fourchesac -> grey magic -> Somewhere in between, I guess??
He's a morally ambiguous (grey) character, in a way, he's a villain in most of his appearances but can also help the good guys at times (mostly in season 2), idk man
