“Comfortable isn’t a bad thing.”
“It sure isn’t, but comfortable gets boring, and this place never changes.”
“Yeah, you know anywhere else hiring?”
“Haven’t had to look out for a job in years, perks of being in this hotel, so not really. Isn’t that what the internet is for?”
“Well, I could get used to this place. That’s for sure.”
“Everyone does. After a while, you start to forget the tacky wallpapers and carpets. It becomes comfortable.”
“A clown came into my work today. Is it too early to quit?”
“You need to be out from there immediately. If it happened once, it’ll happen again.”
“My criteria is irrelevant. You’re the one trying to get a drink. Go ahead, try it your way. See if it works out.” She leaned in, lowering her voice so only he could hear it. “Hint: It won’t.”
His eyebrows furrowed further, lips parting as he looked pretty offended, looking at her and then at the crowd of people with the same expression. "Did anyone ever tell you you can be a little asshole?" He spoke, in the same low tone as she did. "A cute one, but still an asshole." He specified, walking a few steps away from her. "You'll see me do my magic."
She didn’t notice the mildly sour expression that occupied his face for a second. She was oblivious as she forged on. “That can’t be the only criteria. I think they also have to be sort of… Not hopeless, exactly. No, they gotta be… Hopeful. They have to be a bit of a narcissist. Someone like that is the kind of person people always scam on TV.”
Lex listened to her, bringing a hand up to place over his cheek, taking it all in consideration. “But I’m not a scammer...” He said, trying to look serious, but then a wide grin spread on his face. “Or am I?” He couldn’t help but laugh and shake his head. He was only a little bit of a scammer, but why wouldn’t he be? There’s no repercussions for the dead. “Do you see anyone that fits your criteria?”
“You know, you would think with this ‘having all the time in the world’ thing I would enjoy reading more, but I don’t.” she slid the book to him. “You can have it. Someone must have left it here.”
“If you’re not born a reader, you can’t just become one.” He explained, picking up the book in his hands, rummaging through the pages. It was in good enough condition, he could keep it in his secret stash. “What do you like to do?”
“I’ve accepted it. But it’s not really on the top of things I think about every day ”
“What does a man like you think about often, anyways?”
“I don’t know about the last thing, but I guess if it’s what you believe”
“I was being sarcastic, plum. What I did in life I’ll do in the afterlife.”
“I’m with you on that one, somebody has got to put it in their heads that not all ghosts are bad”
“Of course not! Sure, I do know some ghosts that love the taste of blood, but they can just put us all in a bag like that. Even though I love chaos.”
“Well, either they snuck it in or they dropped some extra cash to get it in here,” she replied distractedly, her attention momentarily shifting away from the pup clumsily clambering around on her lap. Lia’s brows furrowed at his strange reaction, wondering at it, but couldn’t quite keep a straight face when the little golden retriever reared up on its hind legs to paw at her chest. A small laugh escaped her, and then another softer one at the ghost’s words. Scooping up the puppy in her arms, she held it in front of her and came nose to nose with it before turning it towards Lex and pressing the side of its furry face to her cheek. “With cuteness?” her voice lilted, affected by the sweetness of the scene that even the reminder of death couldn’t sour. “Besides. You’re already dead, doofus.”
Upon closer inspection, he couldn’t deny that the scene was cute, and that the fluffy little devil was so as well. He stood still as she brought it up near him, and ‘held his breath’ until she said something very obvious, that he had seemed to forget. “Oh, right.” He said, making the movement of taking a deep breath. He didn’t actually breathe at all, neither did she, that wasn’t a thing ghosts did. “I’ve never been around a real dog... I don’t know how to act.”
“To be completely honest we could do that as ghosts”
“Steal? I would never! Last thing I want to be considered as is a thief.”
