             the little pink pill with the flower stamped on the front bloated in her veins. she felt that familiar warmth stain her insides, felt her heartbeat in her chest like it were a sentient thing trying to get out, and danced with her head thrown back. she felt a fist encase her bicep and gasped, smiling when she saw who it was. they were closely followed by an eager - faced stranger, luminous red in the cheeks. ❛ oh! hello. who is - ❜

      despite the crystal clear hints she’d dropped numerous times throughout their interaction, makena seemed to have gotten herself into quite the predicament with a stranger.  being the social butterfly she is, the brunette had decided to strike up friendly conversation while collecting a drink for herself, which apparently gave off the wrong impression.  desperately trying to turn this person off and send them on their way, she announced her unavailability in form of stating her best friend was, in fact, her girlfriend.  a little white lie that this stranger decided to call her bluff on and get slightly more aggressive in their advances, which was why her petite frame muscled through bodies until she spotted valeria.  “babe, hi— here she is!” makena gleefully declared as she slipped slender fingers around the other girl’s arm, projecting her voice above the music as best as she could to the stranger before leaning into valeria.  “code red. this fucker won’t back down, help me,” she muttered frantically to her better half, clinging onto valeria’s arm for dear life as she put on a superficial smile once more in preparation. returning her sights on the clearly inebriated person that had followed closely behind, her free hand gingerly brushed over her friend’s arm before giving it a gentle squeeze.  “this is my girlfriend!  you see, she’s very much real.”

Semester was almost over and holiday break was just a few short weeks away, which meant that Candy was overloaded with studying for finals and packing to go home to Texas for Christmas. Currently she was standing next to her bed, a bunch of dresses and sweaters littering the surface. She was trying to pick out what to wear to the big annual Christmas dinner at her parents church and failing miserably at not stressing out over how she was going to tell her parents that Jesse and her had broken up. Of course it would so happen that when she’s thinking of the man he would suddenly show up, looking for his stupid flannel nonetheless. With a sigh the girl turns around to face him and rolls her eyes slightly. “And you still have my virginity. You gonna give that back?” She quirked her eyebrow at him sassily before turning back to her clothes on the bed. “It’s hanging on the right side.” She muttered after a moment and tilted her head in the direction of her closet. 

      The retort she delivered in response to his accusation caught Jesse off guard and he had to roll his tongue along the inside of his cheek in order to prevent himself from egging Candy on, this time.  If he did, he’d probably never get his shirt back, which wasn’t as important as he was making it seem to be, but that was beside the point.  Giving a slight nod of his head as a sign of gratitude once she told him the whereabouts of the flannel, he stepped over the threshold and entered her room to get to the closet, surprised by how easily it was to get it out of her.  While the environment was more than familiar, once like a second home to the ranch hand, it also caused an uncanny feeling to settle in the pit of his stomach.  Instead of allowing himself to decipher the feeling, Jesse dismissed it as nothing more than being caused by the obvious tension built up between the two of them and focused on the task at hand.  Just as Candy had instructed, after moving a few of her own shirts out of the way, he found the article of clothing hanging up and carefully removed it from the hanger.  “Thanks,”  his gruff voice affirmed the retrieval and as Jesse slung the shirt over his arm, he caught the sweet scent of her perfume or lotion or whatever it was — just her — come from the shirt.  A heavy sigh involuntarily emitted from him as he made a beeline for the door, but he hesitated once he reached the frame.  Turning his head, Jesse’s gaze once again wandered over to her and the clothes she had scattered over her bed, the tip of his tongue peeking out to glide over his lips.  “When do you leave?”

most of her sisters were out, it was rare that the house was so quiet, but emma took that as her chance to knock some things off of her own to-do list. she hadn’t even gotten dressed for the day, clad in a camisole and softball shorts to clean in. between studying for finals and getting her room back into an organized state, she was kept plenty busy. in the middle of putting away laundry, her hype playlist playing on high as she folded her jeans, she certainly didn’t hear the footsteps coming up to her room, but the knock and the sudden presence of a familiar, deep voice shook the girl out of her cleaning frenzy. jumping slightly, she whirled around to face him, tugging down the hem of her top. “jesus, i didn’t hear anyone come in,” she breathed out, unable to help herself from letting her eyes wander over him. she couldn’t even count how long it had been since she had seen jesse in person, it almost felt surreal for them to be in the same room. “you came all the way here for a shirt? what shirt?” emma questioned, but she had a feeling she already knew. she only had track of one shirt of jesse’s at this point, one of his old flannels that she was known for stealing because it seemed as if it was extra soft. it was in the bottom of her closet, stored away. she would deny it if anyone asked, but she still found herself sleeping in it randomly.

     he had to suppress a smirk from tugging at the corners of his mouth in reaction to the fact that he’d obviously startled emma.  it certainly wasn’t his intention, but jesse also hadn’t done much to make his presence be known until he set his sights on her.  “you should really start lockin’ your doors then, huh,”  he gestured with a slight nod of his head back in the direction he’d emerged from, quirking one of his dark eyebrows pointedly at her as jesse was positive there had been a time when he’d insisted on the ‘better safe than sorry’ action being taken more seriously; back when it was his honourable duty to care.  considering she had yet to demand he leave, the brunet took that as an unspoken invitation and took a couple nonchalant steps further into emma’s room, his hands finding their way into the front pockets of his jeans.  “my shirt. i was passing through and figured i’d stop in to get it, yeah.”  it was a little white lie in a feeble attempt to save his own pride and thought it was merely trivial, figuring that the real principal of the matter was whether or not she had the flannel in question.  “y’know, the red and black plaid one.  my closet isn’t exactly extravagant as it is, so ..., ”  he trailed off for a brief moment as his gaze casually scanned over her room, as if searching for any major change or hint of something out of the ordinary, until his wandering curiosity came full circle back to fixate on emma,  “i’m gonna need that back.”

Brodie had stopped himself, but Del already knew what he was going to say. He only ever saw the good in her, and that made her feel warm inside. She missed him – them – more than anything, but they were over and it was probably all her fault. Del was about to ask him how much it was going to be, but he was already paying. “Brodie…you don’t have to pay for me.” She sighed, rolling her eyes at the proud, cute smirk on his face. “The gum’s not for me, but that doesn’t really matter, does it?” She smiled at him and laughed, actually starting to feel like maybe everything was going to be okay. Sure, she was probably going to be upset for a little while longer, but at least she didn’t have to be alone to sulk about it. She had her friends, yes, but having Brodie seemed somehow better.

      “I know I don’t have to, but...” Brodie trailed off while slipping the card back into his wallet which was then returned to his back pocket, giving an effortless shrug of his broad shoulders with the smirk still very much intact.  Even after all this time and the heartbreak that followed their split, he still cared a great deal about Del, more so than he was willing to admit, but there was certainly no denying the soft spot he held for the blonde.  A chuckle soon sounded from the redhead at her admission, the smile he was finally able to pull out of Del causing his own smile to be put on display.  “It’s not for you, wow, okay.  Well, whoever it’s for, tell them I said ‘you’re welcome’,”  he teased, quirking one of his eyebrows slightly.  “But, I mean, if you keep smiling through tonight then no, it doesn’t matter.”  Sometimes he thought he was pretty smooth, when in reality he was just incredibly corny, this being one of those times.  With that said, though, he carefully set the beer in a paper bag and dropped the package of gum inside along with it.  “My shifts over in about ten minutes,”  he started, digging into the front pocket of his jeans to retrieve a set of keys,  “You wanna wait in my car?”

      a flannel shirt had been missing from his wardrobe for at least a month now, and jesse had endlessly searched through the trailer, his truck, and around the ranch he’d been working at but had no luck.  the last place, the ONLY place, the brunet figured it could be was in her possession, if she hadn’t given it away or thrown it out.  despite the fact that late drunken voicemails, taunting salacious snaps, and malicious texts had been routinely sent between the two of them since their break up, actually seeing each other in person was something that rarely occurred.  however, the sole reason why he stepped foot on campus grounds and traveled the familiar path to her sorority house was to retrieve the clothing, no matter if there was a chance that he might have been missing her or not.  at least, that’s what jesse continued to tell himself once he slipped inside the unlocked door of the house ; this unannounced visit was all about the flannel.  in all honesty, he hadn’t expected her to actually be in the house, figuring she would be out doing some devout sisterly duty or whatever sorority sisters did,  so he was a little taken back when he approached her room, baby blue hues immediately fixing on her figure.  “—hey,”  he uttered an aloof greeting, leaning his shoulder against the frame of the open door and raising a hand to effortlessly hit his knuckles against the wood,  “think you still have one of my shirts.”

She jumped slightly when he lashed out, and she almost smiled. Brodie had always been so good to her like that; she really shouldn’t have let that go. “Do I really though, Brodie?” She asked, slightly raising her eyebrows. “Haven’t you hear? Me and my skank friends are all bitches who don’t do shit but sleep around.” She laughed humorlessly. They were all fucked up in some way and everyone knew that. Only one of them didn’t really fall under the whole ‘slut’ category as decided by all the pricks who were pissed off at the girls for whatever reason, but she got the title by association. “Mac already kicked him in the balls. But thanks.“ Del wiped her eyes that had already started tearing up. “I hope he can never get a fucking boner again.” She hugged herself with one arm while the other brushed through her hair again. “You got any plans? My brothers and my sister are with a sitter and who fucking knows where my dad is.” She looked down at her feet for a moment, then back at him. “I don’t wanna be alone tonight.”

      “Yeah, Del, you do,” he mimicked the blonde’s reaction, his own eyebrows raising slightly before he gave a shake of his head.  “I’m not just some random dude who’s gonna judge based on some shitty rumours, I’m your—” He was quick to cut himself off, before anything else slipped out that would potentially make their encounter anymore awkward than it needed to be, and decided to rephrase the point he was trying to get across.  “I know you. And all that shit people spread around, that isn’t you.”  Even after all this time, Brodie couldn’t stand to see her get so upset over something; it still apparently did a number on his heartstrings.  The fact that she’d been hurt by some piece of shit who couldn’t care less about anyone but himself just caused the redhead’s fiery protective nature to burn hotter beneath his cool demeanour.  Chocolate hues swept over Del’s face for a brief moment, until a sigh slipped through partially parted lips and he reached for the back pocket of his jeans, fishing out his wallet and then his bank card in one swift motion.  Before she could say anything, Brodie tapped the card over the debit machine in order to pay for the two items she’d brought up, a smirk cheekily tugging at the corners of his mouth.  “I didn’t, until now. You, me, beer, and gum; a solid combination.”

margot hated it when her stepmother threw dinner parties. she always got stuck making desserts, and always had to listen to her aunt marge talk about how her biological clock was ticking. aunt marge never seemed to realize she was barely twenty one and already had her own business, or that she had plenty of time to get married and have children. she had just gotten away from another conversation with the old women when they caught her attention. “what’re you doing here?” she questioned, coming towards them. “you can’t be here. you know i suck at secrets and i already think my dad’s getting suspicious.”

      without taking the time to really weigh out the pros and cons of attending the dinner party, vance had hastily accepted the invite from margot’s father.  it wasn’t until he was welcomed into the taylor’s home that vance realized just how difficult it would be to keep up this facade of normalcy between himself and margot, casually sneaking quick glances whenever they were in the same room, but keeping himself occupied in friendly conversation with her family and the other guests.  hazel hues sought the blonde out once more, this time locking his gaze with her own as he lifted a glass of water to his mouth, the hint of a smirk touching his lips at her reaction to his presence.  “hi to you, too.”  the greeting came after he’d taken a drink, his free hand comfortably settled inside the pocket of his pants.  “i’m just taste-testing a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and making my rounds, y’know — mingling with your family like a well mannered guest should,”  he responded, nonchalant demeanour cautiously held just in case there were any nosy-nancy’s lingering around the corner.  “do you want me to leave?”  a dark eyebrow raised slightly at his own question, though the small smirk remained on his chiseled features, “i don’t wanna disappoint your old man, but i could come up with an excuse and duck out.”

“Actually, I just left one,” Del responded, folding her arms over her chest and cocking her hip to the side. “And yes, it was interesting, but in the fucking worst possible way.” She ran her fingers through her hair and moved it all to one side. Brodie had probably been the best thing she ever had, but Del could be really fucking stupid and had called the whole thing off. She thought this new boyfriend would help her get over it, but it only made things a hell of a lot worse. “Remember Bryce Fuller?” She asked, shaking her head at just the mention of his name. “Piece of shit cheated on me with some sorority chick.” She scoffed. She should have known that was going to happen. All her friends had said it was a bad idea, but she wasn’t very good at listening. “But I guess it’s fine. Not like he gave a crap about anything I said or did.”

      Dark eyebrows narrowed slightly at the initial brief explanation she offered, unaware of just how shitty her night had been until Del mentioned Bryce Fuller, a name that had always brought a grimace to his features and for some reason caused old feelings of resentment to spark.  Brodie wasn’t entirely sure which surprised him more, the fact that Del somehow got herself mixed up with a guy like Bryce or the fact that Bryce seemed to have the audacity to treat her like she was just another notch on his post.  “It’s not fine, it’s fucking bullshit,” he finally blurted out with a shake of his head.  “But it’s his loss, huh. You can do a hell of a lot better than that asshole; you deserve better, too.”  With that said, his gaze finally dropped from hers, as if just remembering where he was and what he was supposed to be doing.  Scanning the beer and gum, he tapped a button to total the amount due, but he was in no rush to see her go just yet.  “I’m off soon, if you want me to go kick his ass.”

laura wasn’t sure why she’d agreed to this, this party was torture. everything smelled like cheap beer and what she assumed was weed. and now she was trapped in a conversation with their high school’s quarterback. who’s self-aggrandizing story was boring her to death, either he was too drunk to notice or too arrogant to care. everything about the situation was giving the shy girl anxiety, which is why when the other intervened she felt a wave of relief.

“you’re a lifesaver.” she whispered quietly, after they managed to scare the jock off, “i’m laura.”

      Despite her literal shortcomings in height, Makena made up for it tenfold with a big personality and the dauntless approach she took by squeezing her way in between the damsel in distress she’d spotted earlier and the quarterback talking her ear off.  “Hey, dickhead. Nobody wants to reminisce with you over the tale of how you discovered gonorrhoea.”  Arms had folded beneath her chest as a hint of a smirk danced across her red matte lips at his off-guard reaction, lifting one hand to usher him away.  “Go talk about manhandling balls with your bros, and leave this poor girl alone.”  The brunette shook her head slightly as she watched him walk away to mingle with some other unfortunate soul, pink curls cascading over her shoulders as she turned then to face the other.  “No sweat. He’s an idiot, but a harmless one.”  At this point, Makena’s smirk had transformed into a genuine smile and she relaxed from her previously defensive stance.  “Laura... yeah, I’ve seen you around. We have math together, right? Or maybe it’s physics— I dunno, all that shit’s the same to me,” she chuckled and gave an effortless shrug with one shoulder. “My name’s Makena. Do you... normally come to these parties? Didn’t really think this was your scene.”

Another party, another fight and Del was done with her shitty boyfriend. She had caught him in a room with another girl and without another word, she stormed out of the house, not caring that he was her ride home. It had been about half an hour since she started walking and at this point, her body was pale with red speckling from the frostbitten air and her cheeks had red streaks for her tears. Del was going to head straight home, but then she spotted the grocery store that she frequented. She walked in, glad that it was late so not too many people would see how stupid she looked having just been crying and still wearing her black bustier, black leather jeans that were tight as sin, and shiny black platform boots that were making her feet blister. Sure, she had her black and red leather jacket, but it wasn’t doing much for her. Del grabbed a pack of beer and a pack of gum and set them on the conveyer belt of the only open register. Her blood-shot eyes moved up to the person on the other side when they greeted and she hoped that the spark of familiarity wasn’t clear. “Hey.”

      Working cash wasn’t his regularly assigned task during any other shift.  The more laborious work was what Brodie had been hired for; lugging produce off of delivery trucks, wrangling up all the stray carts out in the parking lot, and even stocking shelves when needed.  Tonight, however, they were short-staffed and so he’d been given the pleasure of delivering a superficial greeting to every customer that waltzed up to his register.  While working at the grocery store wasn’t exactly living his best life, there was no denying that he needed the extra cash flow to survive while maintaining his status in college.  So, once he heard someone approach, Brodie closed the fishing magazine he’d been flipping through in the drawer beneath his register, and put on a lopsided smile.  “Hey, how’s it goin’?”  The practiced, hospitable greeting was delivered perfectly before chocolate hues had even lifted from the two items to determine his audience, the smile on display faltering slightly as his gaze locked on the blonde.  The few years since graduating high school, when he last saw her, hardly fogged his memory of her features, especially considering the fact it’d taken him a good amount of time to get over her.  “—Del. Hey,”  this time, his greeting was more genuine, though his smile softened quite a bit at the sight of her — she was clearly upset over something.  “Looks like your night’s gonna be a helluva lot more interesting than mine. You headed to a party?”
