My First Apartamento: Christiaan Houtenbos
The pioneering hairstylist plays host to the cult interiors magazine
When it comes to the universally obsessed-about subject that is hair, Christiaan Houtenbos is undeniably an authority figure. A legend in the fashion industry, and a man who has transformed and tamed many a mane during his 40-year-plus career, from Arthur Elgort and Mario Testino to Inez and Vinoodh and Cass Bird, Houtenbos has worked with them all. In the first episode of a new collaboration with Apartamento, we take a look inside some of the homes featured in past issues of the acclaimed interiors magazine. Today, Houtenbos welcomes us into his Manhattan apartment. "I moved to New York in 1966 and I stayed for half a year, and I lived in a YMCA on 23rd St. across from the Chelsea Hotel. I had friends at the Chelsea but I couldn’t afford it, so I lived at the YMCA and it was hilarious–it was the size of a closet; it had a table and a bed and a toilet down the hall. It cost $5 a week. “Half the time I’m in rooms and I’m like, 'OK, where the fuck is the bathroom?'” "New York, compared to every other city that I think I know relatively well, sets itself apart because it’s so big that it doesn’t just have one clique that runs the show. I always hear from people in Amsterdam, London and Paris, for example, and that if you’re not in the right clique you’re not in. Here, there are too many cliques. There is this clique, there is that clique, clique clic clop... whatever. And so it’s definitely a little bit more flexible. You can be in and you can be out… I don’t know if that’s understandable, but I always find that in New York. "To move? I can’t bear the thought! There’s one place in the world where I know which way to walk and find the bathroom, you know. Half the time I’m in rooms and I’m like, 'OK, where the fuck is the bathroom?'" Via NOWNESS
LESS // IS // MORE.
Haider Ackermann F/W 14.15
We seem to be having a serious Less Is More moment recently. This Haider Ackermann collection epitomizes the statement, and exudes a certain power of sexuality. This is one of our all time favorite collections. The hair, the makeup ( note the use of hair elastics cut and glued on as eyebrows), the color palette, the music, and most importantly the brilliant construction of the garments themselves!
L. Pierre "Neverland Transmissions Mixtape"
Ninety years of Disney means there are many vaults worth of eerie concepts and jingles that got shelved away. "The Song of the Seeonee" by composer Terry Gilkyson was cut from The Jungle Book (1967) for being too dark, along with "Brothers All" (although many creepier songs were left in). The nature of these tunes – littered with spooky calls from damsels in distress and the sinister sorcery of an earlier magic kingdom – worm their way into former Arab Strap member Aidan Moffat's "Neverland Transmission", a languid, downtempo Disney nightmare featuring a spectrum of age-old classics like "Scales and Arpeggios" from The Aristocats and Peter Pan's "Second Star to the Right". It's a dreamy journey turned nightmare-ish nirvana, a complete u-turn from L. Pierre's (aka Aidan Moffat) earlier work in the Scottish indie rock duo. Burning with a slow fuse, this molten mix rebuffs the pristine Disney veneer for a pleasurable cruise to Neverland's magical shores.
