Black Panther (Film) | Rating: 4.5/5
After the death of his father, T'Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. :takes off reading glasses used purely for effect: So, I went to see #BlackPanther (or Negro Panther as someone nameless called it, lol) and…it was good. Very good. I must say, this is the first origin movie in a long time you THOTs hyped up but actually turned out to be worth it.
Pros: It felt like a true standalone movie and there was very little mention of any other marvel characters or story lines. The plot itself was solid and it touched on A LOT of relevant black issues but did so accurately and in a digestible way for the general audience IMO: African & African American tensions (your black experience may not be my black experience but we can and should still support one another), the black family dynamic (specifically the brother-sister bond and cousin bond), black women in general (strength, intelligence, loyalty to a fault at times, beauty standards, etc.), family secrets, colonizers (lol) and our relationships with them (the good = Everett Ross/the bad = Ulysses Klaw), etc. I really could go on. There was a nice balance of both sides’ perspectives in every topic. Plus, it was really nice to see so much melanin popping on one screen.
Cons: For a Marvel movie, I thought there could have been a few more action sequences or the sequences we got could have been longer. However, there wasn’t really a need for them other than entertainment and they wouldn’t have served the plot in any way. The fighting style of most of the characters was a little chunky to me but I think it fit the theme. It would have been nice if the elder council members had more to say. They were just props/background decoration and I was waiting for them to start popping off like aunties (“hey auntie”) and uncles at a family gathering but they never really did. I wish we got more insight into the different tribes that made up Wakanda. And, I think the way the Klaw was handled could have been done in a more dramatic way. To be chasing this man for half the film, the climax was a bit of a letdown.
Overall, good movie but at the end of the day it’s still a Hollywood blockbuster backed by a big studio mainly focused on earnings. It will serve to inspire a new generation of creators/creative thinkers but I’m not convinced it’s a catalyst for anything as some seem to think it will be. People make change, not movies. What will you do to keep the story/momentum going once Marvel and the rest of the world have moved onto the next flavor of the month (Infinity War)?
P.S. - A few savages called me Erik Killmonger lol but I related to M’Baku/Jabari tribe leader most, your dark humored and petty older cousin who tells it like it is but will be there for you when it truly matters.
P.S. 2 - Was anyone else screaming, “Drop into the floor. DROP!” at Daniel Kaluuya’s character? :stirs tea and taps with spoon:
