Media Analysis
http://hccw.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/New_Flyer_HCCW_Salute_v11.pdf
My media analysis comprised of an event that I actually went to on Tuesday May 6th, 2014. The event was in part of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin and was the 26th annual Salute to Hispanic women conference and awards luncheon. I chose this as part of my media analysis because in the luncheon area there was a discussion panel that comprised of all Hispanic women and their personal struggles in becoming known as “leaders” many of the discussions actually spoke to how their race was used against them by placing these women into stereotypes and creating a barrier to their success. As a Hispanic going to the conference was simply a way for me to learn ways to overcome those types of barriers. Although as I sat through the panel discussion I noticed how certain themes arose between the struggles these women faced and the same issues that have been placed against Latin Americans as seen through the Bernshoff and griffin text. Though the text delves more into how Latin American men are portrayed as either the Latin lover or the greaser women are seen in a much more different light. Women of Hispanic heritage encounter some different types of stereotypes against them such as being a home maker or even being the center of “evil” or being a trouble maker. Based on the text information I saw that these common themes arose for the particular women of the panel discussion. For instance one speaker, Griselda Aldrete who was a representative speaking on behalf of Wisconsin as well as being the execute director of HPGM, spoke in depth about being a part of the .05% of Hispanic women that represent those that actually achieve attaining a PH.D. This is of value because by attaining her doctorate in her field she spoke about all of the barriers she faced as being a Latina and how many people expected of her to be a stay at home mother and that she was obligated to do home activities such as, cooking, cleaning and being away from any type of leadership role which includes the privilege of gaining an education. This conference was much more personal to me because I was able to not only take information that I gained from this class but also through personal experience to gain a better understanding of the personal struggles that those individuals of Hispanic heritage face through their daily life and how much are society has changed or not changed based on previous ideologies. Although with the link provided it is hard to see the panel discussion members and their accreditations, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Wisconsin website provides important information that support the growth of Hispanics throughout the state and ways to overcome the barriers we face as a race to become inspiring leaders and moving away towards common ideas about Hispanics. The conference was something that was open to any person and I believe to be an experience that everyone should take a part of in order to help not only with Hispanic struggles but to become a much more culturally competent in our society as well as taking in how the material we read about is very much existent in our society.
