bell hooks, from all about love
if yâall are going through a very hard time mentally rn I just want you to know that there are millions of people right there with you, holding your spiritual hand in solidarity. love you
OK, so.Â
For folks still in academia - odds are if you had a particularly strict prof this would still be considered plagiarism unless you cited the source (unless the fact is widely known in which case you just have to preface with something that indicates or implies what youâre saying is general knowledge. I donât have to cite a source that the Moon orbits the Earth, for example - weâve known that for literally centuries).Â
What they mean when they say âuse your own words, donât just copy the bookâ is actually âtake information from multiple sources, read it, analyze it, and collate it into something new that is your own creation.â Yanno that saying, âIf you steal from one author, itâs plagiarism. If you steal from many, itâs research.â? (fun fact: this common expression is itself an example of the very thing it describes - if you like etymology and idioms, you can look up the history of the expression here) Yeah. Academia works exactly this way. If you write a paper with only one source, itâs still basically plagiarism, you havenât put any original thought or effort into making something new.Â
If, instead, you fact-check your source with other sources and get a diverse range of (reputable) opinions on the subject, you can pull it all together into something new. Even though none of the facts youâre presenting are new, your conclusions and your presentation are your own. It is wholly your creation, building off the work of those whoâve gone before - exactly as Newton meant when he said, â If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.â Which is also a great example of collecting concepts from many sources and distilling them to their essence in your own work.Â
not a meme but i think it would be pretty fuckin cool if we all did this. and not just for a month, but until we start getting what we deserve. they only profit off of us. they donât deserve our attention. eat the rich.
idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, itâs not because you wonât be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsbyâs green light or whatever, itâs because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if youâre wondering what happens when you DONâT develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com
this post went from 600 to 2400 notes in the time it took me to write 3 emails. iâm already terrified for whatâs going to happen in there
k but also, as an addendum, the reason we study literary analysis is because everything an author writes has meaning, whether it was intentional or not, and their biases and agendas are often reflected in their choice of language and literary devices and so forth! and that ties directly into being able to identify, for example, the racist and antisemitic dogwhistles often employed by the right wing, or the subconscious word choices that can unintentionally illustrate someoneâs bias or blind spot. LANGUAGE HAS WEIGHT AND MEANING! the way we communicate is a reflection of our inner selves, and thatâs true regardless of whether itâs a short story or a novel or a blog post or a tweet. instead of taking a piece of writing at face value and stopping there, assuming that there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the words on the page, ask yourself these two questions instead:
1. what is the author trying to say? 2. what does the author maybe not realize theyâre saying?
because the most interesting reading of any piece of literature, imho, usually occupies the space in between those questions.
One reason academics use so many words to say things isnât because of what they are trying to say but because of what they are trying not to say.
iâm⊠iâm⊠170,000 notes deep into this demonic post and someone finally added something great to it?!

Donât judge her, she probably couldnât afford adoption papers
I work at a humane society shelter, and this does happen occasionally. usually cats wonât âstealâ the kittens, theyâll hear them crying and stick around and if a momma doesnât come around theyâll take them somewhere safe and try to care for them
we recently had a very confused lady who called that her cat was trying to take care of an astounding 8 kittens and brought them in
the kittens were obviously malnourished, and we looked around her neighborhood and sadly found the dead mama, she got hit by a car
itâs a really useful thing that cats will do
sometimes the mom will just have gotten lost and will come back to try and find her kittens and so that can be frustrating, but considering how rough it is for stray kittens, itâs a lot better for them to be in a household and cared for where the parent cat can get guareenteed food and shelter
I canât tell you how many abandoned kittens we find that canât make it
it sucks a lot
anyway tangent done
I just đđ I love cats a lot
Your cat isnât a kidnapper sheâs an ADOPTIVE MOTHER donât be rude
âŠ..Cats are Mandalorians.
My most fave comment so far.
This is the way.
