On that same note, since it’s the season, and witchcraft has become so big in pop culture these days, I hate to be Like this, but after browsing the “pagan/esoteric” section in a big-name bookstore last week, I feel the need to warn y’all that the MAJORITY of these books are full of bad information, mistakes, or just blatant lies.
You get used to spotting BS as you go, but here are two major and common red flags:
The book claims to teach “the old ways,” ESPECIALLY if it’s citing Irish or nondescript “Celtic” practices. Historically, we know very little about pre-Christian Irish and most other Celtic cultures’ religious and magical practices, so unless this author is citing a For Real vampire or ghost for their info, it’s fake.
Check the literature cited! I opened about 15 books IN A ROW to their literature cited sections, and guess who they referenced for information! History books? Books on folklore and traditional beliefs? Books on language or religion?
No, no, and no. They almost Exclusively cited Other Authors in the same section, and when I pulled THOSE books, they also cited other pagan & esoteric authors.
At this point, it was just a paper trail of people making stuff up at worst, believing BS without question and spreading misinformation for money at best.
If you want to learn about this stuff, I’m Begging you to skip (most of) the bookstore pagan section and head to your local or university library’s folklore and history sections instead! You will find a Lot of relevant, and Real information there!
You CAN find good books on magic practices in the witch community, and there are some authors even now with blogs putting out some great literature, but just watch out for those signals that something may be amiss!
Also, keep in mind info changes all the time. In the last decade, researches have totally overhauled a LOT of what we’ve recognized as “Celtic” history and facts, and text books are still trying to catch up!
this is true, but i feel like pointing out that Irish people know quite a lot about pre-christian Ireland and Irish culture and religion, it’s just not what’s written about in those ~aesthetic witchy~ books. nor is it for non-Irish people to practice.
In fact, much of pre-Chrisrian Irish religious practices and beliefs were of oral tradition, and the written accounts we have of them weren’t put to paper until after the Christianization of Ireland, often by Christian Monks, which is why we have texts such as Lebor Gabála Érenn ( called the book of invasions in English), a text that alleges to describe the ancient populating of Ireland, but it mixes in Irish mythology while claiming children of Noah (the one with the ark) peopled the isles.
It’s difficult to find accounts of Irish religious and magical practices that don’t have a Christian tint to them as a result of when they were recorded in writing.
We also have accounts by Romans, but those are highly suspect, because the Romans loved sensationalizing their accounts of Celtic cultural practices.
I didn’t claim Irish people don’t know anything about their country before Christianity.
What I am saying is that if someone’s (usually these books are American or English) claiming to know what the druids believed exactly, or to have spells, recipes, etc. by them for modern pagans to reference exactly, that’s just not true.
If I may weigh in, we Irish folks actually don’t know quite a lot about pre-Christian Ireland. I mean, the English were trying to erase our culture for 800 years, including letting huge numbers of us die to famine and disease, we’ve lost a lot of our ancient culture and that includes stuff like druidic traditions (especially when it’s actually Catholic stuff like the hedge schools that became a bastion for Irishness, not pagan beliefs). Over 90% of us don’t even speak the language of that oral tradition.
Thank you for your input. I didn’t feel quite comfortable weighing in completely as someone whose family hasn’t been in Ireland for a few generations now.
But yeah, as I said, this is why pagan, Wiccan, and other similar resources claiming to teach pre Christian Irish magic can’t be trusted. On anything. Honestly a claim like that is enough for me to throw out the whole author.
Oh and while I’m at it, if anyone you’re reading even SUGGESTS that St. Patrick was a violent figure who tried to destroy druidic tradition or pre Christian Irish cultural and religious practices by force, R U N

My mom: huh what are you doing?
Me looking her straight in the eyes: I’m making offerings so the fairies don’t kill me
My dad once cut down a tree arch and I was terrified for days that I was gonna die like I flat out wouldn’t leave the house
if you're still scared of them, you can write them a note and leave milk and honey out for them! i swear fairies don't want to kill you (well, the majority of fae, there are some "bad" ones by human standards but it's rare to see them near people/inhabited buildings), they might seem mischievous sometimes but unless you disturb them or anger them, they're usually very discreet! they steal things sometimes though so if one of your items disappear, just leave another offering and ask them to return it nicely! they're kinda like bees in a way
