On this month in 1966 #NancySoriaHernandez is jailed for refusing to be sterilized in Santa Barbara, Ca as punishment in a case that stemmed from her being found in a room where marijuana was being used. Hernandez, who was on welfare at the time brought up the question by the public of whether a woman living such a life should be supported by tax payer dollars. Sterilization on minorities at the time was happening across the country to Latino, Black, and Native American populations. In one case a Chicana who refused to sign a release was allegedly punched in the stomach by a doctor and then sterilized. In 1975 ten Chicanas would file suit against the city of L.A. these practices. #barriohistorian #barrio2barrio #Chicana

Julia, a Muppet with autism, makes her debut appearance on Sesame Street. 

“She does things just a little differently, in a…Julia sort of way.”

It’s great that Sesame Street has designed a character with autism. I think the character will help kids understand autism in a better way and encourage acceptance. Adults can try and explain things like autism to a child, but it can be difficult. I grew up with Sesame Street, I’m glad the show is still helping kids learn and grow! Media representation always matters, thank you Sesame Street for still teaching us.
