In which Hamilton never had and never gains any level of chill.

I would say The Heart Goes Last was my least favourite book by Margaret Atwood. As NPR’s Tasha Robinson put it, “[The protagonists’] lack of initiative or capability makes this book deeply frustrating, especially by comparison with Atwood's usual thoughtfully textured stories.”

It started out strong. Subtly terrifying, in a similar way to The Handmaid’s Tale, by putting us in a dystopian world that was just a hair off from where ours could have been (post mortgage collapse). It took us into a 1984-esque world, where you knew that nothing was right. But then, it kind of fell flat. There were sexbots and weird kinks and I didn’t really care about the characters or their plight or the commentary they were bringing up about the world we live in. In short, the story stopped being scary and started being weird. 

I love Atwood’s writing style. There were quotes I adored. Straight-up dry humor and sarcasm. But it was without the depth I’ve come to expect.
