“They have crazy ass peacocks in the backyard,” he replied, looking at the other. Reese let out a breath and shook his head. “You mean I would have kids to be an excuse to leave. If my wife hadn’t pawned them off on her grandmother. Now I have no excuse until she’s ready to leave.”

“Peacocks? Hmm, interesting. I guess it makes sense they’d want ‘pretty’ animals. But hey, as long as they take good care of them.” Lysander shrugged, glancing around the room at all the people. “Well, that sucks. I guess you’re stuck hiding in corners like the rest of us then.”

“Yep.” He raised his drink to his lips, lowering it after he took a sip. “I one hundred percent want to go home already.”

“You and me both. There’s not even any animals.” Lysander took a sip of his own drink. “At least you have kids so putting them to sleep can be an excuse to leave.”

“We can even go to that pub you like that’s a total drag.” Lorcan teased. In truth, the place wasn’t bad but it generally didn’t have much going on. “Speaking of those things, how have the critters been? All alive still?”

“At least the food is edible and you can hear each other talk over the music, unlike those rowdy places you like.” Lysander countered with a laugh. “Yeah, they’re all alive. And so am I, so that’s a successful week at work complete.”

“We don’t have to go to a party, but we have to get out of here.” Lorcan shook his head. “You’ve been holed up all day. Come on, its a nice night out!”

Lysander stood up with a sigh. “Fine, but I have to feed the critters tomorrow morning so we can’t be out too late. And if there’s too many people I’m leaving.”

 “Right then. What are we getting up to tonight? Clubs, pub crawl, you wanna go to Vegas? I heard there’s a right party going on out there.”

“Do we have to go out? Can’t we just stay at home?” Lysander pulled a face. “If there’s a big party, there’ll be way too many people.”

♕ —- “Honestly, at this rate, I’m just going to bow to every magical creature that I come across because there are just too many who demand that respect or they’ll rip you to pieces,” Day said with a shake of her head. “I don’t know how you keep it all tracked.”

Lysander laughed. “Well that won’t do any harm because any creature that attacks you for bowing was going to attack you anyway.” He shrugged, “The first few years you make a lot of mistakes and then you learn from them, thats basically what being a magizoologist is.”

♕ —- Rose knew that she was already feeling rather irritated before she had even arrived at the party that was being put on for her family. But the size of the crowd wasn’t helping. Nor the pleated skirt that she had opted to wear. She was fussing with the waistband when she heard Lysander’s voice. Her brow quirked up and she looked over at him. “Technically, we’re all animals,” she pointed out, “but no, I’m not the type of animal I’m sure that you’re looking for. At a party where animals probably won’t make an appearance because of the amount of people here.”

“Not the good kind of animal.” Lysander shrugged, “There could be a stowaway around the food table.” He contradicted, mostly for the sake of contradicting. He shifted his weight awkwardly, the concept of making small talk with her was not one he enjoyed. After all, the break up hadn’t been a pleasant or amicable one and he’d mostly avoided her all together since. But he was at an event for her family so he owed it to them to at least try to be polite. “Of course there’s a lot of people here, it’s an event for your family.”

Lysander was never a fan of these kinds of parties but often found himself at them, either forced by social convention or dragged by someone. Usually he either just stuck with people he knew or did exactly what he was doing now, look around hoping to find animals. He’d much rather spend the evening with an animal than a person. Which is, of course, why he suddenly found himself in front of one of the people he very much wished to avoid. “Oh, uh, hi. You’re not an animal.”

♕ —- “Thank goodness you’re here,” Dayani said with a sigh of relief. “It’s my first week in this office and a little creature has snuck in and causing mayhem to my filings. It keeps disappearing and reappearing, I tried to be calm and let it get use to me but my boss will be back in less than an hour and I refuse to be fired because I barely passed Care of Magical Creatures.”

“Less than an hour? I’m sure we’ll have it sorted by then so there’ll be no reason to get fired.” Lysander said, glancing around the room, eyes tracking clues left by the creature. “So you don’t know what it was? Did you see a shape or color?” He asked, pulling out his wand. “It’ll be easier to trace if I have some idea what it is, what kind of things has it been doing?”

“Were you the one who called for a magizoologist? Because someone in this building is having a critter problem but I can’t seem to find who it is.”
