Light at the end of the tunnel

I know Tumblr isn't really a thing anymore, #medtwitter has taken over but it is really crazy to think that I am applying for residency now and that I will be done in a couple months. 

I am thankful for how far I have come, idk how excited I am about residency (b/c I am lazy lol) and we essentially work for pennies but if you a are pre-med or still in med school keep pushing

Almost a 4th year medical student - dasss crazy

I started this page when I was a struggling pre-med trying to get into medical school, mainly to look for advice and DM people my many questions in hopes for a reply that will point me in the right direction.

Hello! My name is Michael and I am a first-generation, minority student applying to medical. I had a rough time in undergrad and didnt do well (2.4gpa, 1.8 sci gpa). But, I have enrolled in a post-bacc and after 34 credits I have a 3.7 sci gpa. I read your "This is for anyone who has been struggling to get into medical school" where you list programs that essentially give students a second opportunity. I was wondering if you know of any other programs?

So sorry I am just seeing this now but there are lots of programs. Some schools like the university of Louisville puts you in s direct admit program after you apply and do not get into their med school, if anyone wants more info about this msg me. It is for URM students only

20 Things to know when applying to Medical School

AMCAS opens up early in May, and submission begins in June. Your aim should be to submit your application on the first day because thousands of other applicants will be doing the same.

These are just suggestions/Recommendations of things you should do, do not feel compelled to do all of it. This is what i am doing, it might work for you too. This is a very broad list, you should find something that will help you. This is in no order.

ON APPLYING

1. It is okay to panic, but panic with common sense. 

2. Get the #MSAR it’s $25, Msar (The Medical School Admission Requirements) is a resource from the AAMC that enables you to browse, search, sort, and compare information about U.S. and Canadian medical schools.

3. Start on your personal statement as early as possible, send it to people to look over it. Take it to the writing lab at your school.

4.  Request your letters of recommendation from your professors ( 2 science, 1 non- science) as soon as possible. Get a letter from the Physician you shadow, also get one from someone you have volunteered with. 

5. Filling out your Amcas application should not be taken lightly, start when it opens up, work on it daily before submission day. 

6. Do not use The Safari browser, use Firefox or Google chrome.

7. Write everything on a plain text application like note pad or word pad, then copy and paste into Amcas. I lost 30 mins worth of typing once because my internet decided to go on a break and i did not save it on Amcas.

8. Apply to 10 - 15. Apply to all schools in your state, use the MSAR ( From #2) to see the stats of people who were accepted from previous years, if the lowest GPA of an accepted applicant was 3.7, and you have a 3.0, it might not be a good idea to give them your $38 to reject you.

9. Some people advise applicants to apply to out of reach schools and hope for the best, DO NOT DO IT. If you do not have Harvard numbers, do not apply to Harvard for fun. Don’t play yourself & don’t play your $38. 

10. Study and utilize the MSAR. Understand what the stats are all about. If a public medical school in another state only accepts 50 students, it is very unlikely you will get into that school because you are out of state. once again, Don’t play yourself & don’t play your $38. 

11. Do not talk about any one school in your personal statement, because every school you apply to will read it.

12. Read the mission of every medical school you are applying to, find a way to incorporate it into your secondary essays. If the mission of a medical school is focused on rural medicine, i employ you to Become a champion for rural medicine yourself.

13. When writing secondary essays, find a way to incorporate previous notable Alumni from the school, and also unique information like their curriculum (found in MSAR)

14. Plan to submit secondary no later than 2 weeks after receiving it.

15. Look for Secondary prompts of the schools you are applying to, and start pre-writing your secondary essay’s

16. Do not take donald trump seriously. 

17. It is okay to neurotically check your email over and over again.

18. SDN: It is okay to look at SDN to see what others are doing, but i would not engage in discussions with any of them. SDN is a very good resource to see what happened the previous application cycle. Some good people on there, but a whole lot more of Debbie downers & dream killers, especially that self appointed admissions officer

Keep Pushing in 2020

Regardless of what stage you are in this medicine journey, keep pushing. It is difficult but keep your eyes on the price. I applied to med school multiples times and took my mcat multiple times but I was relentless. So whether it is mcat, med school classes, residency, or fellowship. Keep pushing, seek help and advice. Stay hungry and happy. Welcome to the roaring 20′s, old sport
