2019 Interview with Pete Townshend
NY Post: You were barely out of your teens when you wrote “I hope I die before I get old” in “My Generation.” What would 1965 Pete say if he was told you’d still be doing this in your 70s?
Pete Townshend: 1965 Pete was a bit of a c–t, to be honest. I don’t really care what he would say to me.
(It’s a great interview. Check it out.)
The Who - Girl’s Eyes
The Who preform at the Palais in Wimbledon, May 13th, 1966. Roger did not appear at this gig, so John and Pete covered vocals together and did three songs. (Information and photos from The Who Facebook page)

There just aren’t enough of us out here. We could use some more musicians, roadies, stylists, actors/actresses, journalists, heck—even managers would be cool. Send ‘er around!

“Aw, c’mere Todd.”
“‘s Folk rock still a thing here?” Pete questioned listening. Certainly in the worlds of The Byrds, Graham Parsons, Michael Nesmith, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell- the whole contingent of California C & W. Granted Jeffery was taking more of a rhinestone cowboy approach, or rather a midwest sort of glam- something to set him apart. Wherever the Stones were at the moment seemed to place him, so it was timely perhaps. Listening, stylistically he and Todd were in totally different camps as far as composition and production went, thankfully on Todd’s behalf, but at a glance it might’ve admittedly been easy to confuse them. Part of the the somewhat tight turnaround on this leant a more spare sort of sound that was reminiscent of a bar band, lending a sort of earnestness that complimented the writing and playing. Whether this was the intention or not was debatable but if one could identify it and make an argument it would have been pretty convincing. Listening to a few other of the songs, there was a faint thread of musical continuity there as well, one thing Todd had stressed to Jeffery in one of their spare moments. He was still firmly in the camp of AOR and the artistry of the concept, being deeper and more premeditated than just a series of 3 minute MOR snippets about girls. Maybe it had been Maddie who’d discussed this with him, or he’d come to it from his inspirations, either way it seemed the pensive guitarist had rubbed off in some way. Not that you had to be meticulous, you just had to keep it in the back of your mind somewhere. A reminder that somebody out there will take this more seriously than you, that music had real effect on people and the things you said they took it to heart.
