Hi, I saw your posts about Russian names and diminutives and found them super helpful and informative! I wanted to ask, as a person who doesn't speak Russian but is writing a fic with a Russian character, what would a logical diminutive/nickname for the name Yevgeny/Евгений be? I saw Zhenya online as a suggestion, would there be others? Thanks in advance!

Hey, thank you for your question, sorry for my late reply.

Zhenya would be the best “default” diminutive, both for Yevgeny (masculine) and Yevgeniya (feminine). Other versions would be based on that one: Zhen’ka (typically used by friends, classmates and siblings, occasionally by parents, aunts and uncles and alike), Zhenechka (a default gentler diminutive, the way a grandmother would call them, or a way to address a little child), Zhenyok (that one is masculine, unlike most other diminutives for this name, which can be both masculine and feminine) is used the same as Zhen’ka but feels a tiny bit dated to me (ymmv). Zhenchik, Zhenyochik, Zhenik exist but aren’t used as frequently. I know a female Yevgeniya who prefers to be called “Eva” (Yeva), but that’s not typical, Eva is a different name.

In English, a lot of Yevgenys, but not all of them, prefer to be called Eugene.
