Rereading the beginning of the Murderbot diaries cuz my day was shit, and decided to do some math on the “well over 35,000 hours” murder bot mentions has passed since it cracked its governor module.

4 years. It’s had free will for 4 years, and done nothing with it but watch tv shows 😂

Honestly though, four years is a long time and thinking about all the stuff it would have gone through during that period because it wasn’t yet capable of imagining any other life is crazy. The vast majority of its clients treat it TERRIBLY. How many times did it willingly let itself be tortured for its clients amusement during those four years, or risk its life because its clients used it as an expendable piece of equipment, or intentionally inflict pain on one of the humans it was trying to protect because a supervisor ordered it to deal out punishment?

We know all of those things have happened more times than it can even remember, but it hits different knowing it continued going along with it even when it had a choice. Buddy was so fucking existentially depressed. It hated its life so much, but had zero faith that it could ever live a better one to give it the motivation to excercise its free will and stop putting up with all that bullshit.

There's a disconnect happening here because the primary function of social media for most casual users is to form a circle of friends around the usual things that friendships are built on: shared interests and lifestyles and ideas of what is important and what is unacceptable. When people are mainly doing leftism on social media, this encourages thinking of leftism as centered around establishing high-minded social clubs.

For anyone who still isn't getting it from someone who helps people IRL: There's a difference between whom you're helping to feed at the mealshare and whom you're choosing to hang out with for fun after the mealshare. You don't have to invite a hungry person with opinions you don't like to play board games with you, but you do have to help keep them from starving if you're serious about leftist organizing.
