Strangers. We started off as strangers. You were always so serious and reserved. But I saw the smirks and the glint in your eye when I crossed paths with you. Those words you bit back when you weren’t relaxed. Classmates. Every class I felt you there, every sense of my being pricked up when I heard your voice. Those knowing glances of when we both hated a comment or judged a classmate. Followed by a laugh but we never hung out or tried to be more. Then something shifted. Friends. Texts until late at night. Confessions of life’s greatest turmoils. Lost love on both our sides. Heart break and courage. Uncovering of scars we were both to scared to fully get over. Dark nights, long walks, snowy drives. Music intertwined in every conversation. Love. Then I fell in love. I hated it. Every second of every day consumed of thoughts of you. Someone told you and you wanted to talk about my feelings. You wanted to be sure we were on the same page, “only friends?” “Best friends?”

Ofcourse!

As I bit back all the embarrassment of a one sided love affair.  So I stay as I die a little inside. Until I meet a new stranger to take your place and start all over again but I’ll be more careful this round.
