Portrait of Citizen Jean-Baptiste Belley (ca. 1797) | Jean-Baptiste Belley was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a baby. He later gained his freedom, owned a successful wig-making business and fought in the Haitian Revolution. He went on to become the first man of known African descent to hold a government position in French history.
