The Weighing of the Heart Ceremony, Ammit (gouache on paper)
Angus McBride (British, 1931-2007)
Kicking off my project with the letter A! Going to be putting together a series of 26 mythological/folkloric/cryptid creatures and characters for each letter of the alphabet. All REBLOGS and LIKES are appreciated! Name: Ammit, Ammut, Ahemait. Area of Origin: Egypt With a name meaning âDevourerâ or âSoul-Eaterâ, Ammit was a female demon from ancient Egypt. The beast was comprised of the head of a crocodile, the frontal half of a lion, and the back-end of a hippo; the three largest man-eaters known to the Egyptians. Ammit lived near the scales of justice in the Egyptian underworld. There, Anubis weighed the heart of a person against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth. If the heart was deemed un-pure, Ammit would devour it and the person would be unfit to continue their journey towards immortality. The personâs soul would then be forever restless, likened to 'dying a second timeâ. Â

This is as much a resource for me as it is for you - I have only watched part of most of these so take them with a grain of salt!
