OBVIOUSLY it shouldn’t be normal for players to compete under these conditions. And I don’t care that “the heat is the same for everyone,” I want to see the best tennis player win, not the better endurer of heat.

Sure, dealing with outside conditions is part of tennis. Players have to adapt and whatever. But where exactly do you intend to draw the line?

You’d think it would be when a player who has dominated the past tournaments (including Indian Wells btw) suddenly can’t physically handle the heat anymore. Apparently not.

You’d think it would be when you watch a player collapse to the ground after winning, struggling just to get back up. But it’s still not enough.

As a tournament you must respect the players. It’s already embarrassing enough that their requests on the organisation have been ignored for over a year, but now their health is being brushed aside too. Be better.

And to the people celebrating what happened today, fuck you, learn how to experience sport for what it is: a game. Get emotionally involved all you want. Root against players if you want. But learn where to draw the line between rivalry and pure insensitivity, you’re not playing with dolls and you’re not twelve anymore.

As for Jannik, there honestly isn’t much to say. He’s a beautiful player, and it’s heartbreaking that this happened the way it did. He deserved this career slam more than anyone, and it will come, I’m sure that it will come. Every fan of the sport is a fan of him, and there’s so much pride in what he has already achieved and what he’ll achieve in the future.

At the same time, growth is also part of greatness. Despite everything, he still had his chances to close the match and multiple opportunities to go up a break. It’s fine, that’s part of the journey too. We grow, we learn, and we’re also coming for Wimbledon 💚

god beware it took my waay to long to update my fic but now i actually did and i hate paragraphing the entire thing after i already wrote it because i generally mostly don't bother when i write for myself so im still getting used to that.
