Imma be real, when I heard that Texas got snow, and it was cold there I assumed it was like, mid 30s to low 40s
It's 19 degrees in Dallas rn. For a city that is in a desert state, that has never had to worry about snow plows, or salting roads, or any of that, this is really bad. It is my natural instinct to make fun of southerners when they whine about the cold, but it is 33 in Vermont rn, and Texas should never be colder than New England.
If you lose power at home I suggest running your car in 10 minute increments, keeping it warm, and making sure the battery doesn't die, but not so long that your risk carbon monoxide poisoning
Wool, fleece, and flannel are the obvious choices for warm fabrics, but nylon is also effective at trapping body heat
hot drinks, warm yourself up from the inside as well, it's good for fighting off hypothermia in the early stages, which is key, but caffiene and alcohol make you feel warmer than you are, so avoid them in this scenario.
If you have a fireplace, or a wood furnace grab the fire wood and get toasty, this is also good if you have kids, cuz they can toast marshmallows, which might distract them for the time being
Do not layer more than two pairs of socks or gloves, you will start cutting off circulation, which will make you colder
Speaking of circulation, make sure you aren't sitting idle for too long, jumping jacks, jogging in place, or just walking around your house. Anything to get the blood pumping
check your windows for possible leaks, and no I don't just mean cracks. My childhood bedroom had this one window that would slide out of place, causing air to seep in in the winter. Placing spare blankets and towels work as a quick fix for this, though they are by no means a permanent solution.
Close doors, it is a lot easier to maintain heat in a single room than your whole house, which means getting the family in one place, and doing your best to seal it off.
