A cartoony guide to reptiles and amphibians of Los Angeles County!

This was a labor of love honestly, I spent SO much time on it. Using iNaturalist and Californiaherps.com I made myself a list of what the most common reptiles you could encounter in LA County. CAHerps was especially helpful by providing regional maps and listing physical characteristics that differ from region to region.

I did my best to cross reference what a given species might look like in LA County as opposed to other areas of CA they might naturally occur in. I'm not trained in either herpetology or scientific illustration so obviously it's going to be a little bit off the mark, but I did my dang best. Plus, I hope by giving the drawings a bit of personality it'll help you remember what you might be looking at in the wild if you so encounter one of these wonderful beasties!

I am going to be selling these at prints at local LA conventions, we'll see if theres enough interest to merit selling them online but for now, I'm really happy with the result!

noticing small mistakes in artists' work is charming; it reminds me of the hubris in ancient beliefs or the practices of Islamic art, where artisans would sometimes leave a tiny imperfection in geometric patterns as they believed only God capable of creating perfection.

or of Celtic folklore, where a mistake was deliberately made in the stitching of garments, as it was believed that fairies were attracted to perfect things and might kidnap the person wearing them; or to allow the soul to escape! in Navajo weaving there is a similar concept of the "spirit line", a small break in the pattern allowing the spirit of the weaver to leave the rug rather than being trapped in the design.

this might be the future of art in a world threatened by artificial intelligence: the reminder that art is an event of making, a record of being in the world.
