not liking the show is not a minority opinion

im glad alec is problematic in the book because no human being is unproblematic. he became jealous and angry over magnus not opening up to him. he’s 18 and in his first relationship, he’s never had to deal with jealousy until camille pops up touting about her relationship with magnus and he overhears this and they’re already on rocky edges with magnus not opening up to him in general and yes he gets very exaggerated by pointing out every person who knows magnus and he asks “did you date them?” and already vulnerable from this camille latches onto that and alec lets her bc he thinks magnus being on the same level as him (lifespan wise) will mean he has to open up to him

it’s not okay what he did/attempted to do and he hates himself for letting it even get to that point but alec being problematic, any character being problematic in some way is not a terrible thing. no person is unproblematic. it’s how we choose to learn from and grow from past problematic behavior that matters.

it’s wonderful how the show touts alec/magnus but actually just treats them like token gays and give their relationship zero depth

#they get praise but there is no true build in their relationship #except in 2x10 with the extreme of magnus could be dead oh no oh no #but there is no real build up to that #the books at least gave some build up #despite not heavily featuring them or their relationship #➹ ﹡ﾟ‘ﾟ✧ it’sa me ⎯⎯⎯⎯ out of character

I understand the appeal of show!Clary, she starts off practically gunblazing with confidence. It fits every other female character on TV right now. Y’know let’s get these feminist storylines going blah blah blah.

I love feminist characters, but how is that confidence? What woman, what person at eighteen is confident when their world is completely shattered? I love book!clary for being relatable. A sixteen year old who isn’t super confident about her looks or much of anything except what she knows. That’s relatable. That was such a beautiful character for me to read when I first read these books at sixteen. Her growing in herself is what we see physically and within herself throughout the course of these books. That speaks more to feminism than a badass action girl trope. We already got Buffy, show me more diverse women.

Cassandra Clare gave us that, and I think almost without much thought to it. I know she wanted to have a story like this but with a female lead instead of a male lead (Harry Potter already happened, folks) and she gave such an easy character for her main audience to relate to and look up to. Yes there are people like Izzy who are naturally confident with themselves but there’s a ton of Clary’s out there too who need time to recognize how wonderful and strong they are even if it’s not the same as the strength as other people have. This is manifested in her rune abilities. She helped changed the mindset of many shadowhunters at the start of the Mortal War with her alliance rune and Alec helped further that further down the road.
