The thing that I don’t think gets brought up enough about discussions of mermaids is that they make a lot more sense if you think of them as sea mammals like seals and dolphins and otters. Or, platypuses.

“Oh, mermaids hair would be all nasty and dried out because that’s how human hair is when they swim in salt water a lot.” or it might be soft and sleek, like the fur of otters and seals.

“They would have weird red bulbous fish eyes. Or human eyes that are all red and swollen because of being in the water so much.” Or maybe big, dark round eyes that look really cute on harp seals but slightly disturbing the longer you look at the mermaid.

I mean, I don’t want to say you can’t design eldrich freaky-looking species of merpeople, I just want the variety. And for the varieties to just make a little sense, even a mythological species that lives in saltwater would not evolve with eyes that can’t handle living in saltwater.

Thank you for the 200 followers who follows on my shit posts about this damn race.

For that, I posted this old art of mine (2 years ago) which I initially planned to submit to Adarna house but can’t because I had no confidence and I suck, really (as you can see).

It’s about Makiling who finally snapped and planned to conquer/destroy the world in her own beautiful way along with her Elite group of Lagunenyos who think the same.

The story revolves around her plan, and other Phil.Myth gods waking up to stop her, or support her. My favorite chapter is the side story of Sidapa and Libulan and their tragic fate.

Sorry for the long absence!!! I’m so busy in RL lately, and I’m in the process of editing my story, that artworks had fallen off on the wayside. Anyway, I’ve always wanted to do one of these, but it took me forever to actually compile it! I know, I know, I cited Wikipedia, but I don’t own a physical copy of Boxer Codex (extremely rare book), and the images on Wikipedia are good enough to be referenced. I hope you find this helpful at best, entertaining at worst. If any of you have additional information, or wish to correct something, please just let me know! I’m so hungry for resources!  

Also, I was going to include some bits about weapons (especially about the fighting stick and its being “precolonial”), but I figured that weaponry might actually take an entire post by itself.
