(TW: horror, nightmare, dark theme)
Kazo jolts awake in a cold sweat, the warped words still echoing in his mind. As if it isn’t enough for him to struggle with doubts in his waking hours, now his insecurities are chasing him in nightmares as well. Shrugging off the remaining blankets, he retreats outside into the cool night air, ignoring the icy prickles along his bare chest.
After the feverish dream it feels nice to stand in the soft moonlight and catch his breath. Surely the disembodied voices were nothing more than the result of a poorly digested dinner. Already the fear is fading as he shakes off the faint memory of twisted faces and gnashing maws. This is just another subconscious battle to fight.
And one that he intends to win.
Prompt #24: Illustrious
Days passed quickly at the tribe with the fighting over and done with. They had acquired many new mouths to feed and injured to tend to and Kazo went about the necessary tasks without complaint. Occasionally he joined other Lions in hunts or wandered into his brother’s kitchen to help knead dough, prepare meat, and peel vegetables. He rocked nieces and nephews to sleep. He helped put together new lodgings and collect spare bedding to be shared. It was simple everyday tasks that he excelled at and found enjoyment in. There was a soothing rhythm in what might be considered mundane.
After a year of constant worry, fighting against magical forces he still didn’t completely understand, and feeling inadequate, it was a nice change of pace to be in his element. Hunting and care-taking were always second nature to him and the less he focused on the negative, the less it felt like the Lions around him were judging his return to bachelor status - or how he’d declined to step into a leadership role his entire life. They openly expressed appreciation for his support and welcomed his presence in all facets of tribal life. Perhaps he didn’t need to stand out to feel fulfilled. The satisfaction others appeared to gain by being the very best, or achieving heights that no person had reached before, had never appealed to him.
Kazo sat at the evening fire, his ears shifting faintly as he took in quiet conversation and the warmth of belonging, his whittling knife giving life to a carved bird at the top of the wood piece in his hands. Its wings were spread wide, ready to soar. Li’fara leaned over to examine his handiwork, offering a small smile of approval before she turned back to the woman on her left to continue their hushed debate about spears versus bows in combat.
Lifting his gaze to the fire, then to the stars above, Kazo exhaled a quiet sigh. For the first time in many weeks, it was not a sound of exhaustion or sadness. He scanned the heavens above, thinking of his birth mother’s sweet encouragements and the contrasting tough love of his father. Yera was more of a mix of both with an emphasis on more firm, yet gentle discipline.
While the three had very different approaches to parenting, all of them wanted Kazo to be his best. Not the best. His best. Maybe growth wasn’t dependent on learning every new thing or following the paths that others thought suited him most.
Change would come whether he sought it or not.
For now, he would work on being proud of all the things he was good at.
He would make himself proud.
Prompt #9: Friable
The snowstorm yields to clear skies overnight, and the winking stars fade with the dawn to be replaced by endless blue. It’s a beautiful day, and Kala intends to make the best of Azeyma’s favor. She’s been tracking a snow leopard for a sennight, now, her twin brother and their hunting hound in tow.
She should’ve known better.
It happens so fast. One minute, they’re trekking up the mountainside, quiet with the sun on their backs, and the next minute they’re running as the slope starts to crumble. Trygg leads the way, Kala on the heels of the björnätare as they race parallel to the line of sliding snow. She isn’t thinking while she runs. There’s no room for it. If they get buried, then they’re dead, and nobody will find them before they suffocate or freeze. They have to get clear, or at least get closer to the edges of the wave where they’re less likely to be swept downhill.
Snow licks at her legs just as she manages to throw herself at a craggy outcrop, sheltering underneath it with one arm wedged between the rocks and the fingers of her other hand wrapped securely around Trygg’s harness. Snow sprays across her face and fills her mouth, but then the wave is gone and they’ve made it through relatively unscathed. Trygg sneezes, and Kala coughs, letting go as she pulls her goggles up and off her eyes so that she can see.
“Ahlo, are you–”
The words die in her throat, and her stomach sinks to her feet.
It’s just her and Trygg.
“Ahlo?!” she yells, before she can stop herself. He was right behind them, wasn’t he? She should’ve grabbed him, drug him along with her. “Ahlo!”
There’s no answer, just her voice echoing down the slope. She can still see the avalanche crashing down, hundreds of fulms away.
He could still be in it.
She’s half sliding, half-stumbling down the hill before she can think, and Trygg is right with her as they go. He’s more sure-footed than she is, and she grabs onto his harness again, but this time he’s the one who’s steadying her. Her ice pick is in her other hand.
“Trygg,” she pants, “seek. Seek Ahlo!”
She’s not sure if he understands what she’s saying, but he must understand what he needs to do because he forges ahead with single-minded focus. She can’t see her brother, even after the snow finally settles at the base of the slope. The icy dread Kala feels has nothing to do with the cold. “Ahlo!”
Sisters, please, please let him be okay, please let me find him, it’s my fault, I shouldn’t have–
Trygg yanks her, hard. It nearly wrenches her shoulder out of its socket, and she lets out a wordless cry as he starts to dig with paws as large as saucers. She falls to her knees beside him and starts to dig with her gloved hands. “Ahlo!”
She hears a muffled noise over the pounding of her heart, she thinks, and then she finds fabric. An arm.
Trygg scoops up what, for her, would be huge armfuls of snow. They find a shoulder, and follow it to Ahlo’s hat. While the dog works on uncovering as much of the boy’s body as he can, Kala clears Ahlo’s face more carefully.
“Kala,” he wheezes, and she’s not sure if it’s because he was running out of air or because the snow is crushing his lungs. He’s pale and dazed. “Help.”
“I’m trying, I’m trying, I’m so sorry, you’re okay, we have you, Trygg found you, it’s going to be okay and I’m so sorry!”
He doesn’t answer, too out of breath, but his chest is clear and some of his other arm and the top halves of his legs. It’s at that point that Trygg shuffles around the edges of the hole they’ve made around Ahlo in their attempts to excavate the boy, bumping Kala out of the way with his broad nose. She yelps with surprise and falls onto her hip, but she understands as the dog ducks down, nudges at the back of Ahlo’s head, and then leans in further to grab onto the back of his coat with his teeth.
Ahlo manages to fumble around enough with one hand to hook his fingers onto Trygg’s harness, and Kala scrambles to grab his other wrist. Together– well, it’s mostly the dog, but she’s trying– they haul Ahlo the rest of the way out of the snow, and after that the teenagers just sit for a while. Kala presses her forehead against Ahlo’s, and he leans on her.
Eventually, he pulls away so that he can instead throw his arms around the giant dog beside them. “Thank you, buddy,” and Trygg almost looks like he’s smiling. Kala sniffles, and reaches out to wrap her arms around one of his big, furry forelegs too. She adds, “Extra treats when we get home.”

Prompt #15: Thunderous
Kazo liked being in the rotation of guards at the gate, appreciating the quiet nature of most of the Lions who took up posts there. While they had to be vigilant, it wasn’t exactly a hard job to sit and watch the forest. There was the anticipation of the arrival of their enemies and the start of combat, though Kazo felt oddly calm about the impending battle. Their tribe had always been strong and well-prepared when it came to matters of war and it was rare that anyone was arrogant enough to challenge them on their own lands. Most of his worries were related to his immediate family being injured or how this was all going to effect Caspian and the redhead’s birth-mother when all was said and done.
Li’fara was to his right, equally silent and paying rapt attention to the unmoving foliage in their view. She seemed to end up on the same guard shifts as him often, though they rarely spoke. His gaze lingered on the woman briefly before returning to the trees and he felt her questioning glance moments later. He could hear the shifting of her body before she moved closer in his peripheral, setting her spear aside and producing a small pouch from her belongings she carried.
Honoring the peaceful silence, he didn’t speak. He hardly dared to acknowledge her presence, uncertain where he stood with the woman. Many of their tribe considered moving away to the city as some form of betrayal. He could understand the sentiment. Tribe members who didn’t live within the tribe lands contributed very little to their resources and offered no protection to the others. They were effectively outsiders. Still, Kazo’s nearly two turns away from this place only served to make the tribe feel even more like home. Caspian called it ‘hiding’ for Kazo to linger here, but now he found himself reluctant to return to the apartment in the Mists. Not to avoid anything or anyone. Moreso for what he missed when he wasn’t here.
He knew Li’fara had been the one to send up the alarm with her thunderous roar when the Lynx scouts arrived days prior. Whether or not he had been present, there still would have been danger and the same Lions would have answered the challenge. In fact, Kazo’s presence had little effect on the outcome of that day. He wanted to make a difference. Would he, if he stayed? Why was it that some of their people wandered while others lived out their lives here?
Startled from his thoughts by a sudden light touch to his hair, Kazo looked to Fara’s serious countenance. In her lap was a collection of feathers, bones, and baubles that were customary to weave into hair for luck before combat. Kazo had yet to tame his rapidly growing mane with any braids or bits of things as he typically would. Today it was simply left loose, which was not the most tactical of choices if they had to face the Lynx warriors again.
She gave his hair a gentle tug as her eyebrows lifted and Kazo was reminded of a time in his younger years when she was among a group of similarly aged Lions who took turns testing war paint designs on one another. He offered a small smile, his head dipping in acceptance before his eyes returned to the tree line.
She began to braid.
Prompt #2: Aberrant
“So much wasted potential…”
“Don't just lay there, Kazoo. Do something.”
“That’s incredibly naive.”
“Are you even your own person?”
“I don't think I can be with you.”
He didn’t belong anywhere; a puzzle piece too abnormal to fit. His very essence was twisted into tatters he no longer recognized; ethereal, violent, voices clawing to be heard and released. No one saw his true shape; his worth; his purpose.
Will the stars even save him a place?

“Is there anything you wish we’d done?” “I suppose I’ve always wondered if you might like to learn an instrument. A violin would suit you, and I could teach you. Or the harpsichord and we could learn together, seeing as how I’m hardly an expert myself. I wish I had written music with you rather than just for you–you’ve a unique view that I think would lend well to it.” “You say just for me as if I have not worn your orchestrion roll to shreds, untiring of its beauty. I brought…the small orchestrion, actually. I’d wondered if you might not indulge me with a dance.” “If I ever say no to that, know I’m possessed by some otherworldly creature. Of course.”
As the hourglass empties.

There is a puffed sigh, followed by a soft chuckle. How many times had he heard him say this in his life? The concern in his brother's voice was more familiar to him than the stars in the sky. Always ready to bail him out, save him from the trouble Cas had gotten himself into. "I'm not going anywhere."

Kowa is unsure whether wifely performance or shared horror keeps Rachelle de Durendaire near, but she is at her husband’s side, her mouth an unpleasant slant. Only once has Kowa been allowed in the Observatorium infirmary, the librarian who she coaxed through illness sneering at her upon good health, and she dislikes it no less now. The bleak stone rooms encourage pain, for the ill to unburden the See from the inconvenience of their survival.
Rachelle takes one look at the Keeper, her book snapping shut, and strides from Austrant’s room.
“Put me down, please,” Kowa requests, and Kazo sets her on her feet. He is as resolved as the rest of them not to leave her alone with this man and she knows better than to ask him to leave. Austrant is awake, a teacup perched between his six scattered fingers. The angel has razed what little remained for destruction, fault lines jagged down his throat, and Kowa has never felt closer to him than in this mutual ruin.
Until she lifts the insignia from her throat, tosses it unceremoniously across the bed, and watches his eye go blank with panic.
“I quit.”
