I just finished my first fic in years, first finished fic on the internet actually in my recorded..

history, even the one I wrote as an exercise in finishing things remains incomplete.

Anyway it's a Rodrick Heffley x Eddie Munson x eventually Steve Harrington smut fic. Its realistic to the real world, not so much cannon compliance

EXERPT;

Rodrick knew he was bi, he had known it for a while and he thought it just made him cooler. Cuz he's so definitely cool! So cool in fact he drove away from his stupid little home town to go to a concert in Connecticut of a new but- quickly becoming- favorite band. What could go wrong?

On the other hand Eddie knew he wasn't cool, he would have ROCKED the 80s, he would have been so cool in the 80s- but with the fading away of rock and metal in the 90s and punk getting more out there he felt like he was losing control of his situation. So he left- just for the week- just to get away- just to see what the hype was about this new band performing in New Haven-

Boring tired disclaimer: Keep in mind that this is an introductory "drawing" "tutorial" and has some generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. Which happens to be true for everything in general.

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

Hi, quick question! For people who have low vision, is it harder to read text with no capitalization? Apologies if you've talked about this before! Your blog has taught me a lot, and I really appreciate it!

Generally, capitalization helps. Like at the start of sentences and stuff. Screen-readers don’t have an issues with all lowercase unless it is a hashtag (in which case it might be less likely to read it well).

READ FANTASY BY BLACK WRITERS

Just because race and racism isn't real inside your narrative doesn't mean it isn't real in the eyes of your viewers, that still exist in the real world

So yes you still have to be aware of stereotypes when writing, yes even when the characters are coded

If you describe your characters well enough we'll know they're Black even if you don't say "Black", same way you never have to say someone is "White" and no one is ever confused

Especially if you give them culturally specific names or clothes (respectfully!)

Fantasy racism allegories are a bullshit idea unless you're willing to commit to what racism really IS, otherwise let it go and write something else

If fantasy magic applies to your white characters and their customization (hair, clothes, hygiene) then it applies to your Black ones as well

Please give Black characters something other than straight or wavy hair I'm tired of visible wigs on Black people in these fantasy shows

If you can find infinite ways to describe white people in flowery ways, you can too with Black people (that don't have to be chocolate related)

Fantasy doesn't have to mean Eurocentric!! Other people and cultures exist!

So I started using duckduckgo a little over a year ago. At my research job I was advised to be careful about what I googled (versus looking up in reference documents), because Google is data mining all of us and the company is concerned that Google might sell data on what we are searching about to competitors. Which is its own level of creepy cyber dystopian hell.

Anyway I figured I'd just bypass that entire problem by using a search engine which didn't datamine me, a thing which apparently never occurred to our data security team because Google has sunk its claws into every aspect of our lives. And at first it felt a little bit clunky because it has different searching priorities than Google and I found myself having to relearn subtleties of search term optimization and how to parse results which I never realized were unique to Google in the first place. Meanwhile at home I was using Google and duckduckgo in unequal proportions because I hadn't really committed to making the switch you know?

And this means I got to be the frog with one foot in the slowly boiling water and one foot in a nice bath of room temperature water for reference as Google rotted from the inside. I don't know how long this process has been going on and how much I missed. But from 2022 to 2023, Google has gone to hell. It is almost unusable compared to what it was a year ago.

Nonsense pay to play search engine results now consume more than half of the first page, which we all know, but the stuff below that has gotten less and less useful too. It's gone from duckduckgo being a slightly less powerful search engine (with a bit of a learning curve that compounds the effect) to being objectively head and shoulders better than Google, and it's not because duckduckgo has gotten better! In just over a year!

I feel almost crazy because I don't think I would have noticed it if I hadn't had one foot in and one foot out of Google like I have, simply because of how often we all use Google and how slow that makes the enshittification process from search to search. But it's real! Google has gotten so much worse! It is eating itself alive!

Ohojojohoho I'm gonna write the shit out of evil colonizing white people in the series I will eventually write and publish- I'm already banishing violent men in it to an island where they're babysat by fair and just dragons and lie detecting feral cats.

Adding cannibalism as something so fucked that even the ones on the island are off put by it because...why do people want to eat eachother?

The cuteness aggression thing humans get for eachother doesn't mean you should eat your partner, instead consider eating your partner out. They'll enjoy it much more, no risk of death for either party and yk- stop eating fellow humans.

There's an argument to be made for desperate measures and survival but like..people don't come back from that without trauma

And consensual cannibals exist but you've gotta wonder what led them to that train of thought, I'd like to be educated if there is a train of thought there cuz I'm curious but also-

And read books that make you question yourself and your comfort, I have a net zero attention span and a library card, get with the program and pick up a real book..or like an audio book yk what I mean! Intake knowledge!

"just through that door" he answered, waving a hand in the direction dismissively as he smoked and read through the sections he had given Anthony, it taking him longer than it had for the other man to read. though it was truly a close competition as Anthony was still adjusting to the increase in eyes, so far choosing to keep the freckle imitations closed

Anthony nodded and went in the pointed direction, closing the door to the white marble bathroom, the toilet lid and rug both covered in purple fluffy fabric with soft white towels, embroidered with something in Spanish (el jefe). he looked towards the large sink mirror, he was glad not to be high anymore, though felt glad that last night's viewing of himself led to sneaking into the moth's lair his brain having earlier felt like it was going to explode from the amount of information thrown at him. he took another good look at himself, this time naked with his innocence truly gone. the first time he's looked at himself sober since-, he dropped the robe and did a little turn for himself. he tilted his head at remembering how rare his build is in hell- if he's doing porn now that would definitely come in useful.

he leaned in to look at his face in the mirror, squinting and blinking to see his many eyes in action, he liked how much the smallest ones blended into his fur, making them look like freckles. he concentrated real hard and blinked just the small ones, laughing in astonishment at the ability to see like he used to when only using the two big eyes he has, or if he wanted he could see absolutely everything. his feet were also weird but shoes would fix that for him- after all he hadn't initially noticed Valentino's strange bug legs looking at him the first time. he pissed quickly like he had originally planned; not wanting to make it seem like he was doing anything other than that and flushed, washing his hands and opening the door to see Val leaning in the doorframe

"you were taking some time in there, just making sure you're okay" tony nodded and dried his hands off as the other spoke, about to walk past the other out of the bathroom when he was asked a shocking question "have you given any thought to a stage name?"

There's something so tragic about sexism in media

There are plenty of fem/afab characters in media but how many of them have comparable line counts to their male costars?

And at that how many of them pass the Bechtel test?

These are genuine questions! Can someone recommend any shows that are open ended enough to write fanfics about that don't have the plot all boil down to a white man
