(Pfft did I say 5 sentences? Because 597 words later....)
"I love you but please stop doing whatever it is that you're doing."
Jay freezes just shy of the open door, his arms hidden behind the wall as he leaned back to look at her.
An up-to-no-good grin appears on his lips, “what do you mean?”
Evie pouts back at him, not buying his attempt at innocence for a moment. He’d been going back and forth from the back rooms to the front of the house for the last hour and he wasn’t being the least bit quiet about it. She has no idea what he’s up to but it’s been driving her crazy.
“What are you doing anyway?”
His smile only grew, “nothing you have to worry your pretty little head about...for now.”
Jay quickly takes off before she could question him more, his laughter echoing behind him. Evie groans in frustration. He was up to something and she couldn’t tell if it was good or bad. Though she wanted nothing more than to get up and follow, Evie remained at her desk to finish her latest dress design.
She tries to focus but Jay’s mischievous activity only continues to nag at her. He was being quick as he continued to pass by the room, passing by before she could see him.
“Alright!” he appears at her side, taking the pencil from her hand and setting it down.
He grins, pulling her up and out of her chair. She looks down to see her night gown in her hands.
“Don’t ask questions, okay. Just change.”
Jay pushes her into her bedroom and waits, that grin never wavering. She can only stare with a raised brow. It takes her only a few seconds to change and when she does, he takes her hands and leads her outside.
The night sky is as beautiful as ever. The full moon shines brilliantly with not a single cloud in the sky. He demands she closes her eyes before he takes her any further. Evie smiles at his silliness and complies, knowing he’d never do a thing to hurt her or misplace her trust.
They’re silent as Jay continues to lead her around. It’s not long before they stop, Jay releasing her hands and coming to stand behind her. His hands find their way to her hips, pulling her back against him.
“Alright, princess,” she can hear the nervousness in his voice, “open your eyes.”
Evie does as he asks and slowly opens her eyes. Her hands shoot up to cover her mouth as she gasps, taking in the breathtaking scene in front of them.
Star string lights hung from carefully from the fort of blankets and pillows in the center, illuminating the area. He’d organized everything in such a way both could fit comfortably. Her favorite stuffed animal, a red and gold serpent he’d won for her at Rapunzel’s lantern festival, rested beside her favorite pillow. A bowl of popcorn rested in the center with glasses of her favorite tea. Their cuddle blanket - as Uma likes to call it - was even there ready and waiting.
“Jay, it’s beautiful,” she turns in his hold, wrapping her arms around his neck.
He smiles sheepishly, resting his forehead against hers, “we’ve both been busy lately. I figured we could use a little date night. Carlos let me borrow his projector and I picked out some of your favorite movies. Mal helped to enchant-”
Evie pulls him down for a kiss, silencing him as he begins to rumble.
She couldn’t have asked for a more promising evening.
