when people try to encourage others to comment on fanfics it's always based around giving praise to something you like. like "if you loved a fic then leave a comment with a line you liked!" "it makes my day when someone says they came back and reread my story bc they love it so much!" but iirc the hay day of fanfic engagement was full of negative, argumentative, and constructive interactions. like i got plenty of comments on fanfiction.net in 2007 but they weren't always nice lol. while "this is great!" "i loved this" are fine comments to get and easy enough to make, they aren't really. productive? interesting? they don't fuel further comments or interaction, so they're just kind of boring to post and read, even if they feel nice. i think if people were encouraged to comment whatever they think, positive or negative, they might give more insightful and interesting, albeit not so positive, comments. like, ill comment every now and again if i really, really love something. but otherwise since the only acceptable comments are praise these days, a kudos on ao3 kind of covers it. i give most of my feedback in screen caps to other people saying moments i thought were especially funny and strange, of pieces of characterization i disagree with, etc etc, often WITH pieces that i really liked, but i don't really feel like just commenting with 100% praise if that doesn't reflect my exact review.
so basically. a culture where you should only comment praise means only the works you exclusively have praise for get a comment. which may be more works for some and less for many more. the choice to comment seems arbitrary when there's only one type of comment to make and there's already a button that sends the exact same message.
now it's time to lock into research and writing... i've got two articles i want to pitch to two different places...!!!
