The blender's arm clonked heavily against the pot, and it was set down as she rummaged for bowls to line up.
They were white, ceramic, and plain; easy and cheap to replace. Chairs scooted out as the team made their way to form a line, but Lily bade them to wait. Each bowl got a swirl of olive oil and a sprinkle of scallions on top, and a couple slices of Italian-style bread dunked into the side. Vincens brought up the rear of the line, to Lily's surprise, and he rested a hand on her shoulder as she finished the garnish.
"It smells delicious," he hummed. "Thank you for lunch."
"I hope you enjoy it!" she chirped back.
She plated herself a bowl and joined the rest of RED, already coming into a chorus of ravenous approval... barring Jack.
"Hey," she chuckled. "Thank Jeff for makin' a grocery run—I just cooked it."
"An' some fine work ya did, lil lady," the Engineer shot back with a grin.
"Mmmh." Vincens sighed, wistful, as he took a spoonful. "I can't remember the last time I had potage on base. You're leaving quite the impression on us."
"Great," Jack muttered under his breath. "One frog is bad enough, but another and a woman?"
The rest of the table fell silent. Lily set her jaw, letting her spoon fall heavily into her bowl before, "Say that again."
"A frog and a woman," he hissed. Jack hadn't removed his helmet before sitting down, but the swing of his head made it obvious his stare was aimed at her. "And the soup is cold."
"Then don't fuckin' eat it," Lily shot back, "ya grumpy piece'a shit."
Albrecht snorted, stuffing his mouth with bread; Nicolai, who'd fixed the Soldier with a hard stare, rumbled approvingly at the rebuttal. "She made ya food, man, don't be like 'at." Jeff took up mitigation, holding a hand gently Lily's way. She didn't say anything further, but didn't break her line of sight with Jack, either. "She been more than kind, takin' up today's kitchen duty before she even been here a week."
((been enjoying getting back into writing, and one of those ventures is getting back into old Lily when I first started her on my main. When I tell you I'm so excited to really dig into the themes I started her on, and get into her backstory more in-depth. AUGH. It's so good to be back ✨))
